Re: Beyond The Sword PTBS - Format Discussion

Just over a week left for game start!

I created a The Gathering Storm - Info sticky topic last night. Please reference it and check your server connectivity at some point in the next week.

I also posted at CivFanatics last night so a big welcome to the new players who have already joined us from there.

For everyone who has already signed up, there is still time to change your mind on Prince level if you are a newer Civ player. If you have any doubts at all, just PM me and we can talk about it. There's not a huge difference between Noble and Prince so don't feel shy about taking advantage of it if you think it will help you keep up with the vets.

Re: Beyond The Sword PTBS - Format Discussion

I'm happy to report that the game officially filled up today! W00t! 5 days left until game start!

Of course this doesn't mean we can't use more people as substitutes/reserves. I'll be keeping a list of subs so if you are reading this and haven't signed up yet then please go ahead and do so anyhow. You never know when real life pulls people away and a nation suddenly becomes available.

Re: Beyond The Sword PTBS - Format Discussion

Any reason why we shouldn't just set up the game now instead of waiting for the official launch? Gives people a bit more time to get comfortable with who they are, find a quiet time to do their setup etc?

So long as everyone understands that players are not required to even start thinking about the game until the official launch date... not suggesting we don't honour the launch date for people who need it then.

Just suggesting it as it gives super keen people like me something to do, something to think about, something to replace the building anticipation!

That's an excellent idea! The game is full and there is no turn timer during the advanced start. This also should work better for Asch since he is hard pressed for time on Saturday. I'll talk to him and get back to everyone.

Re: Beyond The Sword PTBS - Format Discussion

An advanced start question.

I understand there's no timer and that I can take my time in planning my advanced start. However, will it be more beneficial to get my advanced start done early, or late? That is, will there be a need to "react" to other players starts? I've started a couple of 18 Civ games on "Huge" and while I had room to place three cities...that was really about it before I started bumping into other Civ's. In theory, could we be stepping on each other for City placement during the advanced start and need to either "get it down first", or enter into early negotiations?

Bern...you tested this for resources, but I forgot what you found as far as Civ "closeness".

I never placed multiple cities when I was doing my testing so don't know how close the civs can get during the advanced start. Given we only have 600 points to work with I don't think it should be an issue though. It could factor into your start strategy though.

With advanced start each Civ is limited in their setup to a certain area only. If you start placing multiple cities you will see a boundary beyond which you can not take any action. I imagine this has been designed so that none of the setup areas overlap at all.

I've had an advanced start game where we had a good number of points and a small map and everyone pretty much filled out their setup area. The closest we had to overlap was the fat cross of one of my border cities impeding on my neighbour's fat cross.

I don't think there's any advantage to setting up either early or late.

Re: Beyond The Sword PTBS - Format Discussion

The server is up! Everyone should have a private message (PM) waiting for them.... PLEASE READ IT!

One note here on CivStats - it doesn't currently support BTS leaders so if you see "unknown" nations in the list that is why. I also expect the game name to correct itself after our first turn.

All game details are in the Info topic.

The lastest version of civstates, 1.5.1.0 , does support BtS leaders.

I've kept the signup topic updated but restarts going away I think is the only thing that changed since I first posted it.

I'll check on CivStats but I'm pretty sure we are running the latest uploader. Besides, it's not the uploader which needs to support it...the CivStats web site itself needs to as well and it doesn't.

Ya, you are right about civstats.

Maybe you should edit the start time on the signup thread.

Nah, it's fine. The game still officially starts on Saturday. The server coming up early is just a bonus. Besides, I'd still like to get some more potential subs signing up if possible.
