BTS Advanced Start Guide

BTS: Advanced Start Guide

This guide was created in order to help players in the upcoming BTS game (The Gathering Storm) which is tentatively scheduled to start on March 29, 2008. As a result, certain constraints were put in place while doing my investigation:
  • Only 600 gold is assumed to be available so any techs that would require more than that were not included.
  • Only the Noble and Prince difficulty levels were used.
  • Only Large and Huge map sizes were used.
In addition, readers and future participants in the game should note the following:
  • Costs do not include nation traits. This usually applies to buildings, some of which are at 1/2 cost depending on the trait.
  • Of course you can't build certain items or improve tiles until you have the prerequisite technology.
  • The game will start with no turn limit on the timer. Once everyone is done with the advanced start, it will proceed normally with a 24 hour timer.
  • There is 10 turns of "Universal Peace" in effect at game start.
Please reply to this topic with any corrections and I will edit this post accordingly.

Re: BTS Advanced Start Guide

There was some concern that with an Advanced Start that some nations on a full map might get shafted on starting locations...especially the ones who logged in last. I did some extra investigation to see if there was a noticeable difference and I'm pleased to report there wasn't.

The Experiment

I created a BTS game with 18 players (max) on a Huge map. I allocated big points to an advanced start so that I could give each nation Animal Husbandry, Bronze Working, and Iron Working. These show where are all critical early game resources are. I also placed the capital exactly where the game recommended via the red circle.

In a couple of cases I used the "Visibility" feature to push out to see if any critical resource was present. All specified resources are in the fat cross. Anything in "()" is outside of it or not present in the normal viewing range.

Nation 1 (Native American): Corn, Cows, 4 Flood Plains (Iron SE 2E)(No Horses)
Nation 2 (Viking): Rice, Iron, Wine, Silk, Stone, Lake, 2 Flood Plains (No Horses)
Nation 3 (France): Coast - Corn, Bronze, 2 Spices (No Horses)
Nation 4 (Ethiopia): Rice, Cows, Horses (Bronze NW, 3N)
Nation 5 (Korea): Cows, Lake (Horses 2SE, S)(Bronze 2NE)
Nation 6 (Ottoman): Pigs, Corn, Flood Plain (Horses 3NW)(Visibility - Iron 3NE, N)
Nation 7 (Babylon): Cows, Horses, Oasis, Lake (Iron 2SE, 2S)
Nation 8 (America): Horses, Pigs, Stone, Flood Plain (Iron 2SE, 2S)
Nation 9 (Holy Roman Empire): Coast - Fur, Cows, Horses (Iron 2NW, 2W)
Nation 10 (Sumeria): Lake, Iron, Stone, Cows, Spice (No Horses)
Nation 11 (Greece): Bronze, Cows, Gold, Ivory, Flood Plain (No Horses)
Nation 12 (Russia): Coast - Rice, Horses, Lake (Iron 2SE, 2E)
Nation 13 (England): Cows, Ivory, Wheat, Flood Plain (Iron 3SE, S) (No Horses)
Nation 14 (Byzantine): Coast - 3 Clams, Corn (Horses NE, 2E) (Visibility - Iron SE, 6E)
Nation 15 (Celtic): Coast - Bronze, Wine, Cows, Lake (No Horses)
Nation 16 (Spain): Iron, Fur, Wheat, 2 Flood Plains (Horses 2SE, S)
Nation 17 (China): Iron, Rice, Lake (No Horses)
Nation 18 (Rome): Wheat, Bronze, Cows (No Horses)
