    To see enough of the map to make that decision, it would have took buying visibility for 15-20 tiles or so just in that one direction, which would mean not placing the city anyway due to lack of points. Or a scout could have determined the same thing in 2-3 moves.

    Hmmm, well I still prefer no advanced start. Or at least cutting the points back. You can get a lot of stuff for 600 points and I think it has advanced the game too quickly. You can skip the 'nothing to do in my turn' by giving everyone much less than 600 points.

    I think it's too early to say which strategy is best for advanced start. I suspect it does depend on who you were next to and what terrain you were on.

    I love advanced start and I think most people prefer it. If you don't have it, it will be weeks and weeks until something semi interesting happen...

    Which pushes in favour of starting a scout & settler together in your border city in that less than certain direction?
