Re: New Pitboss Game Discussion (Jan 17/09)
Looking back through this thread, the people who have commented have said (capitals for strong preference):
oyzar - OFF
emperor - on
Niklas - on
Rusten - OFF
Bernout - off (though this may be only due to the uprising events, which are now removed)
Munro - off (similar to Bernout)
hsoft - off (said there should be barbs OR events, again might be due to uprisings)
Hoplo - on (ON?)
No one seems to be really strongly in favor of events, while at least two are strongly against, and more seem to be leaning towards off than on. Myself I'm ambivalent, and I would definitely rather turn events off completely than have people like Rusten not join due to them being on.
Btw, during the period that Rusten has had bad event luck, I've had very good event luck. That doesn't really make me more in favor of them though, it feels rather cheesy to get a free settled great person and extra yield while your rival loses buildings and turns to revolts. So I guess I'm leaning towards turning them off too.

Re: New Pitboss Game Discussion (Jan 17/09)
This is way worse than that. This last event is almost like 2 turns of anarchy for me but I don't want to elaborate too much on an ongoing game. There was no option to stop this with gold. It killed the fun for me and while I'd rather quit the game in disgust I'll try to dig up something.
If you lose battles you can at least have a back-up plan most of the time. You can't predict random events like this.
P.S. I don't think I've had a single good event either.

Re: New Pitboss Game Discussion (Jan 17/09)
For the record, I lean toward having events on. However, if it prevents players from joining, I would rather have them off. I think that if I had the same bad luck as Rusten, I would be of the same opinion about events.

Re: New Pitboss Game Discussion (Jan 17/09)
Well, the point I was making was that luck is just part of the game but you are right that at least with combat you usually have more control in which to deal with it. But who hasn't had a string of bad luck with this game that frustrated them at one point or another? The fact that you just experienced this is I think just makes it seem worse than it is; just like your opponents are undoubtedly getting a fair amount of joy out of the situation.

Now you can go down the path of trying to minimize this kind of randomness; certainly in the past I've hosted a game which did just that. Oyzar would have loved it.
Or you can view it as a way to mix things up and recognize the fact that the odds are the same for everyone.
I can certainly put up a vote if that is the consensus. I hesitate to use past comments in this topic about this since I think most people were leery of having barbs and events on due to the barbarian uprisings.

Re: New Pitboss Game Discussion (Jan 17/09)
Quests are fine. Events just get annoying. In TTT I've lost at least 2 buildings as well (one of which I could have saved with a pile of gold..), my teammate had improvements destroyed, and the only good event I can recall is getting +1 food on a plains square that isn't in the BFC of any of my cities.
I leave them on for SP. But for MP, I'd lean towards off.

Re: New Pitboss Game Discussion (Jan 17/09)
I agree with events OFF, barbs and huts on would be my preference, but willing to play regardless.
The event thing is really annoying, even in SP where you are trying to compare strategies. They have NO place in MP IMO.

Ok. I'm working on the signup topic right now. As has been mentioned, there appears to be stronger feelings towards not having events so I'm going to go ahead and make the call and just not have them.

Re: New Pitboss Game Discussion (Jan 17/09)
I'm game for whatever settings, although I tend to use espionage in my strategy so I am leary about the mod you guys have been discussing.
I also prefer to pic my civ as there are a few I cannot stand.
There's my 2 cents.
Very much interested in getting in on this one when it starts if there is still room. If someone could PM me that would be great!

This game has already started (it's the "Fog of War" game). You've already posted to be a replacement player.
