Yup, I completely forgot about the limit and kept the city. Sorry about that. I'll see about giving it away.

Maybe set city to avoid growth, work only food and hammer tiles, produce military and delete when built ... continue this for 10 turns after we are allowed 9 cities ... then start to use the city as normal?

This of course penalizes with maintenence ... so maybe this is not the ideal either?

Not sure that giving it to one other team is particularly fair to the rest though ...

Maybe leave it empty and someone can go raze it?

Too bad we didn't succeed in razing Santiago!

Letting someone raze it might work - razer gets gold to pay for sending a unit out (depending how far), but Elkad loses a little from having to maintain the city for a few turns.

Other alternative might be to just raise the limit to 9. Number seems arbitrary to me anyway. Although this could be taken to be self serving, since I'm at 8 cities myself... anyway I'm happy with whatever.

I don't think raising the limit to 9 now is a good idea. If people have been playing under the assumption that 8 is the initial limit, then it is unfair to change that just because someone breaks the rule. Apart from city maint, there is also the matter of hammers gained thru not having to build a settler (although I suspect Elkad was unaware of the limit).

I have a chariot nearby. If Elkad can vacate, I can declare war, raze the city, and get peace again asap. It'd be nice to hear Elkad's thoughts, tho.

Elkad is Ebenezer here in the forums just in case you didn't know.

I don't care whether it gets gifted or razed but the sooner either happens the better.

 Idiot alert! Yeah, it's pretty obvious now that you point that out. OK, I can do that if Elkad agrees.

Will his extra city really make that big of a difference? Since this is a game for new players maybe we should let it slip rather than artificially constrict the natural progress of the game?

Ebenezer Elkad is far from a new player, so beginner status would not be a reason to let him keep it over the limit.

Exactly. Besides, it wouldn't really be fair to everyone else. This may be a game oriented to newer players but that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of competitive souls playing.

In the particular case of the city limit, I think even for the veterans it should make the game more interesting since this is likely a mechanic no one has had to deal with before.

I've asked a friend - Darth - to join in with me considering Kaleb will be absent for some time. I hope this is ok? He is fairly new to CiV, but has some experience with 1/2/3. I guess that promotes me to mentor.. so take it easy on us... no dogpiling! I'll get him to register here over the weekend.

I'll deal with Elkad's illegal city asap, btw.

That's fine with me although we do have a couple of nations with only 1 player which he could join for the rest of the game if he likes.
