  • Men Of War

Men of War is not a "new" title per say, but it certainly is a super fun, addicting, and ultimately entertaining. The 12th have been playing this for a while, but we started out only experimenting with the campaign through co-op. While this was addicting in itself, it does eventually end, (the main campaign anyway). So we decided to venture out into the world of the multi-player.

This is where the fun continued, and got even more addicting. One night of playing a week, turned into two nights, and so forth. We tried promoting this game in the past, but I believe a lot of people compare it to Company of Heroes, while a great game, it's nothing like COH.

Men of War offers so much depth, its hard to even go into all the details. It also offers a great system called "Direct Control", you can literally take control of any single infantry unit on the Battlefield, as well as armor, arty, stationary, and machine gun units. Direct control was a major selling point for me.

The reason I'm trying to get everyone's attention is to tell you that at TG, we now have a new shiny Men of War forum open for business.
At TG we have been gaining quite the following here lately, of new players to the game. So we'd like to invite anyone who is interested to join us. We also have a Teamspeak channel setup for Men of War (This is under Real Time Strategy Games).
We have also created a group on steam for us to connect easier. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/tg-mow

You can find a review of the game that fldash posted a little over a year ago here.

Also, I would like to mention the sale that GamersGate is having. MoW right now is $2.99 USD. This is a great deal for the hours of game-play you'll get out of this. If you don't like GamersGate, MoW is also on sale over at Direct2Drive for $7.50 USD, not as great as GamersGate, but still good none the less.

While we're on the topic of Men of War, let me talk a little about Men of War:Assault Squad, the brand new title in the MoW series coming out soon. Lots of great new features on-top of an already great franchise. The graphics have also been increased as well.

I'll post a overview of the game from the new MoW:AS website that launched a month or two ago.

Men of War: Assault Squad is the new title in the "Men of War" series. This stand-alone expansion takes place across the globe during the height of World War II and features a completely new cooperative skirmish game mode with access to five different nations (Russia, Germany, USA, Commonwealth and – for the first time ever in the Men of War series – Japan) as well as increased realism and accessibility. The expansion pack will deliver fans and newcomers an intense new WW2 spectacle with almost limitless replayability.

Like previous games in the series, Men of War: Assault Squad includes the unique “direct control” feature which enables players to maneuver units using the directional keys, rather than pointing and clicking. PC Generals can get behind the controls of a tank to smash through obstacles, crush soldiers under its tracks and fire armor-piercing shells at enemy emplacements, or take control of individual soldiers as they fight.

What makes the new skirmish game mode so unique?

    * Different historical settings and battlegrounds for every nation will ensure that each time players will face a different variety of enemies and tactics.
    * Unique hero units for every nation with powerful abilities such as increasing units’ firepower, boosting morale or providing other advantages to defeat the enemy against all odds.
    * Fantastic bonus abilities such as remote controlled bombs that can flatten entire residential blocks, airstrikes able to destroy incoming tank columns, special "For the Motherland!" charge attacks and many more.
    * Improved and dynamic AI ensures that no two games will play out the same way, making each battle a new experience against an AI that really fights back.
    * Improved and dynamic AI ensures that no two games will play out the same way, making each battle a new experience against an AI that really fights back.
    * Choose from a variety of scenario locations ranging from Western Europe, to Eastern Europe, North Africa and the Pacific.
    * The ability to play this impressive game mode with up to four friends in LAN or cooperative online play.

    More new features

    * New multiplayer maps and game settings.
    * Improved multiplayer balancing to provide a more authentic use of equipment and vehicles.
    * Overhauled infantry squads and the ability to buy individual soldiers to suit players’ needs.
    * More realistic weapon behavior and penetration values.
    * A reworked artillery system that provides innovative assault and defense strategies.
    * New types of ammunition that increase the depth of tank combat.

I can tell you, being in the AS beta running right now, this game is going to shine beautifully. I'm really loving all the new features, and the new system of spawning infantry/armor. Loving the higher resolution textures, and all the new Elite units. Also, I would like to mention, that the new COOP skirmish mode is awesome! It will have great COOP features, but none of the story-telling. After playing it for one round, this will surely be a popular game-mode for you, and three other friends.

Here is the official MoW:AS trailer.

It is also worthy of mention that officially there is no support for x64 based operating system. Several people report no issues running it, but beware it might not work on your system.

Also, if you want to play the game, Direct2Drive has it on sale this week.

I gave up on RTS sims after CoH ( I even gave away my copy). This title has rekindled my love of the genera (From Dune and Command and Conquer...) and I can not believe I missed this product when it came out (*kicks self*). I recently discovered it myself (thanks to Troublesome) and have become an addict. I was seriously disappointed in Company of Heroes, and would not even put it in same category! The attention to detail and realistic ballistics alone make this a superior product...and for $3.00 how can you say NO!?!?!?! I need more newbs for this game folks, buy, buy, buy!!

Unfortunately my experiences with MoW haven't been good because of the nature of it. That is, how you control individual units and are sometimes expected to do extraordinary things while micromanaging every single unit (I know about control groups but still). That being said, I like it when you only have to deal will a small group and doing small things. But, that also being said, the AI are pretty phenomenal and can handle most of the stuff on their own but it's so annoying if they run out of ammo in their weapons and you have to go around and spend time finding them a new one or letting them die. IMO, it doesn't offer me as much fun as CoH with Blitzkrieg mod. Then again I haven't played the full game either (MP).

I haven't played MP but I think that would be better than SP. It's just that I hate that they ask you in SP to defend Sevastapol with hundreds of Russian soldiers while being attacked by thousands of germans with tanks and Thor 600mm guns. MoW is more realistic in senses and let me tell you there's nothing more awesome than going through a village and having the turret turn ever so slowly towards the enemy. I truly do like that a lot, the tanks are awesome in MoW.

And writing and reading about MoW has now sorta inspired me to try MoW again. I think every game has its weak spots I guess. I don't think I'll have as much fun playing CoH, but I can still have fun.

A nice game if played at a small scale imo. Micro in the game is painfully labouring to perform and to expect to be able to do it without being a South Korean elite Starcraft-player just doesn't exist in my world. A cool, unique and ambitious game, but that falls face-down on its own complexity.

Nice to see an article about it thoug. Games like this don't get enough attention

I play MOW:GSM III mod quite a lot, but find a few things frustrating, namely the lack of English-speaking players in the community and the strong leaning towards tank-only combat. I don't care what language my rival speaks but if I can't communicate with my teammates while my enemies chuckle away at our disorganization then there's zero point in playing. And while I did play 1v1, I got sick of people using ridiculous tactics and then quitting the game to prevent it from registering as a loss on their rating.

Myself, I like a nice 300pt infantry or light vehicle 1944 platoon/company skirmish without payback. When people start spamming racketenwerfers or calliopes, they demonstrate their absolute inability to play anything but point management. Sure, finding your enemy with an officer and not yourself being revealed is somewhat challenging, but for me, the true fun in the game comes in maneuvering 2-3 squads of men a light vehicle and some light support weapons through immediate maneuvers in a firefight. I was playing this with a few guys, but all they ever wanted to do was test mode mass fuel-truck rushes. This game needs to be played with real respect for the context and realistic quality of gameplay, not just to win by raping your enemy's spawn with a Puma because he forgot to buy an antimateriel rifle/AT gun instead of a jeep/truck with a complement of light infantry.

I bought this game a while back but did not play it for a long time because I convinced myself it was too much to take on all at once. I finally gave in and started playing with some established players and they really helped get me going by showing me some basic shortcuts. 3 months later it is one of my favorite games because it is challenging, requires teamwork and tactics to win and we have a lot of fun playing together. While you will find people in TS many nights of the week, we now have an official community game night on Wednesdays. Mantis posted the information here. Come join the fun.
