But the game doesn't have the same amount of awareness as real life. Have you ever played a paintball or airsoft match? Heck, remember when you used to play Hide and Seek as a kid? It's really hard to walk silently, and you notice even the tiniest sounds. You can turn your head and look in an entirely different direction much faster than in the game, and you don't need to turn your whole body. The minimap works as a substitute, you can't have the same kind of awareness, but you can have different kind.

They have real maps, satellites, GPS, Coms to support groups, Never ending intel, Night Vision, X-Ray Vision, Heat Vision, UAV's and a slew of other tools to assist them in their job...

They may not employ them all at once but they sure do have the latest intel and satellite imagery on hand.

Once again I think it is a tool that is realistic in a sense that we don't have the other tools that they have on hand.

But I would not mind if we all wanted to try and not use it for a few days or whatever...My Comms be kewl...LOL!

Potshot's got it. Even though there is no such thing as a minimap, it does its best to bring the individual player's situational awareness back up to a nearly realistic level.
