Unhappy Family: Can't live with them, can't kill them...

Hey all, I have some explaining to do:

I returned from a week-long business trip to Houston this morning. My brother, his wife and their kids came for a visit this last weekend. My wife let our niece and nephew use my computer (against my directions). On my account.

My nephew, being the upstanding teen that he is, went through all my stuff. He also played a lot of my games. He also went through my games folder I keep on my desk (among other stuff) and used a print-out I made of Root's temp admin guide--it's here on my desk when it should be in the folder... I guess the rest some of you know about (sorry Yer Mom ).

I'm really angry and embarrassed this happened. Doubly so because it involved an online community I care so much about and it was my own fricking family. So to ensure it doesn't happen again, I mailed my nephew a booby-trapped package with a flashbang in it.

Happy Hunting

RW

+rep for you. Jolly decent of you to come here and apologise old chap.

Next time you go away, could I suggest passwording your BIOS, and changing the passwords for all accounts on your pc?

And my friends wonder why I make them use my "backup" PC rather than my main one whenever they want to browse the Internet or play games. I've just got too much stuff they could screw up. I also make liberal use of Ctrl + Alt + Del and Enter before I leave my desk.

If you're using XP or 2000 make yourself admin, keep your password to yourself, and setup a few Power User accounts for the others to use. If anyone gives you grief about it, you've got the perfect anecdote to shut them up.

Yeah, I think I'm leaving the laptop and taking the power cable for the PC next time family visits when I'm away. Thanks guys.

Back in the day, you also had a lock on the system unit that prevented the keyboard being used.

Bios Password FTW.

It's the best method to locking up the comp.

Best bet is to just fdisk the harddrive before you leave and then reinstall everything when you get back. That way noone can stumble across your pRon. :O
