Re: The Time

"There would never be a problem if when you go afk change to spectator team first."

Good in concept, bad in practice.

If someone expects to be short-term AFK, they won't want to suicide if live or miss the next round if dead by going spec. If they expect to be long-term AFK, it's socially preferred they leave the server as to not occupy slot 16 when someone might care to join. That leads to kicking of spec players, which eliminates the option of going spec for the medium-term (two-or-three round) AFK who will go SPEC for an important phone call, but doesn't want to leave and wind up not being able to rejoin. (Careful, that sentence is loaded at the end. )

I think the best method is to simply maintain that players change name to <name> - AFK 5min or - AFK 2r or likewise. That would allow the public to know if someone is AFK and last alive on a team, would allow a player to go SPEC without fearing being kicked right before coming back (since an admin would give them the specified time before kicking, unless it be particularly long) (And that's happened to me more than a few times on various servers... I sit down and *pop* Kicked by Console appears) and would eliminate the need for goofy behaviors like thetime spam.

Re: The Time

No, if you are AFK, you should join the spectators, and if the server is full you should leave. It's a common courtesy. You shouldn't keep people out of the server if you're not going to play yourself.

Re: The Time

Also, thetime, or timeleft as i preffer should not be concrete signs a player is AFK just a cue to hint one side to type "y Are you AFK?".
Then the other player can either type "y nope" or remain idling away from his/her keyboard while making some hotpockets or laying out a fudge dragon, or both

This raises a whole other question of ettiquete. A lot of the players that have been a round for some time know that it's proper to answer to anyone asking if you're afk. Some of these newer faces I've seen just blow off the question and keep going. I hate to see this when that happens, because without fail a silent response (even when the player isn't afk) results in someone moving towards their spawn to take them out. This isn't the fault of the one who asked, it's the fault of the one who did not answer.

Re: The Time

Sometimes chat just doesn't come through in CS:S. I've seen this quite a few times. Ask three times minimum before you even think about advancing.

Re: The Time

I've never (not)seen text not come through on CSS. But the fade time is pretty swift. I always set my chat line time to 30 seconds so I don't miss anything.
