Re: A Whole New Server
hmm.. so when did this change ? maybe an "anymore" at the end of that might be in order ?? Hasnt it always been opposite of BF2 ?? .. BF2 kicks the player who has been on the longest and CS kicked people who have been on the shortest... Im crazy but not that crazy.

Re: A Whole New Server
I don't mean to pry, and I do realize that the Ins server hasn't really picked up, but I just watched 4 guys get kicked for SM's at 4:36, myself included.
The server does stay full of SM's, but the community doesn't have enough SM's to require another server? Is that what I'm understanding? Every player on the server may not be SM, but I think there is enough of a SM player base to require some form of change to keep our non-SM regulars in. I may be pushing the envelope, but I don't think many of the regulars will disagree. I just played 4 rounds of hacienda, and I probably won't be able to see the last of the map. I'll get a spot on map change, but I doubt I'll stay entirely too long. Shortest, or longest, I'll get kicked before the map changes. Lol. We've already been through this on the NS side of things. Someone said above my posts that a second server would stay empty because people play with their friends. That's true, but remember, when their friends can't play, they won't play. The NS community's second server stays empty the majority of the time. We use it for tournaments or whatnot that spawn from inside the community. But, there are nights of the week when I see both NS servers full. 17 of 17 on both of them. I think two CSS servers kicking on Friday night would prove both to hold capacity, with people begging for slots. I wish that I could edit my above post. One thing that I have noticed that the second server has done for TGNS is produce a new player player base. This means that people see tacticalgamer.com servers more often because there are two of them. Server 1 may have 6 people playing combat, while server 2 has 17/17 playing NS. This draws new people who have never played with TG regulars and members to our community. I'm sure Apophis can vouch for the amount of new players registering these days for the TGNS community. They may not be SM's, but sooner or later, the majority of the regulars you have will turn to SM's. Just food for thought. -Mom

Anyway, I'm sure Apophis has the hard numbers, but keep in mind that the number of SMs has to be taken into account across the board. If you were a Supporting Member, for example, you'd only count as half of an SM for CS purposes if you split your time evenly between NS and CS. I'm sure that Apo's decisions on allocating resources to all the different games is not one that any of us would want... Without enough SMs on the CS server, TG simply can't afford to set up another physical server. Those things cost money. I have no idea how many SMs TG would need to gain in order to stand up another server, but I think your best bet would be to convince a few of those regulars to start pitching in if you want another server. We all like to say that TG isn't pay to play, but the bottom line is that without more Supporting Members, TG simply can't keep offering more and more free servers.

The bottom line is we are aware of numbers and the need for a second server. We'll get a server setup when it's necessary to do so. Until then stop complaining about being kicked by an SM and just become one. :P |

Re: A Whole New Server
Within reason, this is the case across the board at TG. If we grow too fast, we might have to limit our growth in order to choose admins for the servers, but, yeah, in general, it's a lack of funds that keeps TG from growing larger. So, the resources are scaled to match the number of SMs.

Re: A Whole New Server
Another thing to keep in mind is that we do not look to maintain a 1:1 ratio of SMs for a particular game and servers for that particular game. If we held that philosophy we would have no reserves available to support new games. With multiple interesting games on the horizon, having reserve funds to procure more hardware to support those games is essential for both the growth of TG as well as the preservation of our member base.
Additionally; The more we grow the greater our infrastructure expenses get. In addition to the game servers we also have the TeamSpeak server, mail servers, DNS servers, database servers, web servers and additional servers and network-attached devices to deal with backups of the site, databases, configuration files, etc. We also have a development server that is used by a core group of people to develop and support applications such as the reserved slot management applications and some other tools that are currently in development. It's actually a rarity for us to *need* a second server for any game. In the event that our SM numbers increase so much for any particular game that we're filling to capacity with SMs, that would be a reasonable trigger point to expand to a second server.

Re: A Whole New Server
I own a Dell 1850 Dual Xeon machine 2GB RAM and it is only running a Teamspeak server for some friends and family to chat. If TG wants a server (game server) at no additional cost let me know...
The server is hosted by Internap using premium bandwidth and so people worldwide will get good pings. (66.150.57.131) I can setup a ssh shell or other access to Vulcan or whomever manages servers for TG needs to admin the server. PM me if there is any interest...
