Re: 8800GT The one card to rule them all.
Just came off another hour of the Crysis Demo. I got tired of COD4 fast action and just wanted to slow down a little. I just got my new 8800GT and yesterday I directly tried doing very high on 1920*1200 which did not work that great so I switched to COD4.
So today I did another approach I went to 1280*800 with Nivida scaling and for fun I put everything on very High and some AA for good measure. That did the trick. I now run very high DX10 and 2x AA at 1280*800 the game is just breath taking and the 8800 GT graphics card was only 279 bucks at best buy. I have it on 90 days return in case any better cards come out that looks more interesting (Christmas Gift receipt). The game still needs a better card for really smooth framrate even at this resolution but definetly great graphics with this card.
If you need a new card for Crysis I can recommend the approach of buying a 8800GT at best buy and frys and enjoy crysis on very high on a lower resolution, then if you dont feel like keeping it or want to wait for other cards just return it.

Re: 8800GT The one card to rule them all.
I'm thinking hard about getting 2 of these sometime this month. But, I'm waiting to see what December will bring since the 8800GT is actually not running at full tilt. There are 16 more shader cores on that chip yet that have yet to be enabled and I'm hoping we see that 128 shader core card by December.

Re: 8800GT The one card to rule them all.
I think thats confirmed. The "New" 8800 GTS with the g92 core is slotted for early december release, that and ATIs plans is the reason I most likely might return the 8800GT. I just dont like the fact that the 8800GT only have 512 MB of memory and the 256 bit memory bus, as both these affectes performance at higher resolutions which I would like to play at. It still a damn good card and great performance at midrange resolutions even on very high in Crysis. And I just cant wait to play the full version of crysis on very high. Good thing COD4 SP is so short so I will be ready for Crysis.

Btw, just a friendly advice, for what I have read the 8800GT might not be that great in SLI as you use higher resolutions. 8800GT will still be faster but the gain will be a smaller factor 1.3 - 1.5. To really get the full benefit of SLI you need more memory as the memory is still per card. The new 1GB 8800 GTS is a diffrent story that card has the potential to be awesome in SLI. One 8800GTS is rumored to be as fast or faster that a current Ultra and they should scale better in SLI if you have the 1GB version that is.Last edited by Red; 11-08-2007 at 12:27 PM.

Re: 8800GT The one card to rule them all.
3800 series is not looking that great. I'm glad I got the GT when the price was still pre-crazy demand markup.

Re: 8800GT The one card to rule them all.
There is a newer 8800GTS 640 (still the older core though). It's more expensive and has the double slot cooler, but performs better at higher resolutions compared to the 8800GT (more so in DX10 modes).

Re: 8800GT The one card to rule them all.
Well my GPU just died on me last night while I was playing HL2, artifacts all over my screen... I returned it to the store where I bought it a year ago so it 's on its way to the factory now (MSI). It 's an X1950 Pro which they no longer produce so if they can't fix it, they 'll give me the value in cash.
I talked to the guy in the store and he said the 8800GT is not yet available in Belgium (not even Europe), but it might be in two weeks for a price of 230€. ATI 's new cards will cost 175€ and 215€, which sounds very interesting if the more expensive one can compete with the GT.
Playing with my old X740XL now... damn it s*cks to turn your graphics down

Re: 8800GT The one card to rule them all.
Just looked at the 3870, not to bad. it will be cheaper than GT and as the motherboards with X38 is out it might be worth getting to use in Crossfire, rumor is that some partners will sell them for 199 a piece. Now lets see what the new G92 GTS can do.

Re: 8800GT The one card to rule them all.
First benchmarks of AMD 's 3800 series are up at Tgdaily (source):
The HD 3870 comes out best in the FPS per Dollar comparison but the 8800GT outperforms it in 90% of the benchmarks. AMD has a slight advantage at higher resolutions with AA and AF turned up.

HD 3850 will retail for 179$ and HD 3870 for 219$.
3800 series advantages:
- 55 nm process
- four-way crossfire will be supported on Vista
- DX 10.1 (not that big of an advantage... yet), SM 4.1
- UVD (Universal Video Decoder) = hardware acceleration of HD DVD & BluRay movies.
- PCI-E 2.0
3800 disadvantages:
- dual slot card
Specs comparison:

Damn these 8800 GT's get hot. Mine was at 91 C after 45 min of Crysis.

Re: 8800GT The one card to rule them all.
The default fan runs very low on the 8800GT, use riva tuner to increase the speed and while your at it boost the clock. Got my BFG 625 to 700 without a problem. A word of warning if you dont use headphones the fan noise will detract from gameplay, thats why Nvidia set it so low as its pretty crappy cooling solution.
If I keep my 8800GT the cooling will have to be upgraded.

Re: 8800GT The one card to rule them all.
I put on an Accelero S1 with an 80mm panaflo on it for good measure. It's a pretty tight fit in my case.
