Yeah, when I was playing the demo (haven't got the full game yet- need to upgrade my PC) I tried to see how far I could swim before I got eaten by sharks. Prophet told me 'These are shark infested waters'. I thought 'Great!'. Then I got blown up by a missile. It is free roaming to a degree, but then again you could say that about CoD4.
(Please don't start shouting at me fore being dumb if it is more non-linear in the full version )

^^^^COD4 is about as on rails are you can get without being Time Crisis.
Shame on you mag. COD4 isn't a tactical shooter. (Times like this we need a shame on you icon.)

Re: Shame about Crysis...
games arent total free roam yet as there is hardware limitations. I think the next closest game will probably be far cry 2 but its not out yet, so you never know. Crysis is HUGE compared to cod4 or just about any other shooter. while were talkin about cod4, while the graphics really are great...nice textures, animations, and the like...that engine cant handle the same fidelity with evironments as open as what Crysis has. Notice how most of cod4's levels are rather confined compared? Sure there are kinda open levels but for the most part its miniscule compared to crysis. And yea, cod4 has somewhat alternate paths, really it boils down to which door do i want to go through. It is through and through, a scripted game. While there is some scripted sequecnes in Crysis just for story's sake, the rest is very unscripted. How often does the same battles play out the same way....not very.
Sorry i got off track comparing the two games...
I digress...I love both games but the technology that cryengine2 has...well, theres no equal. Even if you dont like crysis, theres real true potential for anyone who wants to use their engine.

EXACTLY... that was the whole point of the initial post, the potential is there... but why didn't they add more game play modes, no one has answered that...why would there be deathmatch but no team deathmatch... why is there no capture the flag, assault and defend type missions... the Crysis engine, Crysis map, Crysis island is made for all those game modes... but yet all they gave us was a SP campaign, and 2 MP modes...
Then theres the unrealistic ballistics, unrealistic weapons damage etc ect...

Re: Shame about Crysis...
and thats why theres mods...maybe you should try making something more to your liking...theres lots of turtorials and documentation out for their sdk, although i dont do that stuff so i wouldnt even know where to begin...but more than likely, youll appreciate obsidian edge 2
i really dont think you shouldve expect more out of crysis though as far as tactical stuff. Its an action game, through and through. Swat 4, this is not and never was. Maybe some more mp modes would be nice but that wouldve meant more development time and we prolly still wouldnt see it till next cristmas.

Re: Shame about Crysis...
You also have to compare it to other action games. In my book it was the best action and most immersive action first person shooter I played in a long time.
Sure they could have done more, but so could infinity ward have done with COD4. The small levels and scripted action in COD4 is are in my opinion sad for a game with that large budget. But it was enough for it to sell like hot cakes.
Its mostly about money and time, crytek spent most their money on the engine and then tried their best to do a good action game which in my opinion they exceuted very well, I was not to much fond of the Aliens but the rest was beyond great.
As always the story is that games have budgets and time tables. They wont be perfect. I agree its a little sad because the potential is definetly there. Thats why I think mods and future updates / expansion are going to really use the full potential of the engine.
Even Blacksand that did PR is doing a mod in the cryengine. Give it a few months and I think the mods for this engine will bring it to the front with a vengance.
This engine just blows all other games planned or currently released away.

I love all of the suit options. I think what you are missing (or maybe I am just too easily amused) is using the options together. For example, using cloak to sneak up, wait for an enemy to walk by you, grab him, uncloak, switch to super strength, and then toss him against the nearest cliff wall. No sound to give you away, don't have to use any ammo.
Or what about using the super speed to dodge enemy fire and then shooting back at the enemy before they realized you are 20 feet away from where you were a second ago.
Or my favorite...using stealth to get around an enemy patrol, then switching to armour and falling off the cliff to the rocky area below and bypassing them completely....

I've used the suit for those kinds of tactics but I don't find it interesting managing my suits power levels. Moving while cloaked consumes so much energy that it seems quite useless. Super speed doesn't last very long and leaves you vulnerable because you don't have super armor. So even though you can switch back, you're left with very little energy for a few seconds. I just want the suit to give me more of an edge.

This game is totally free roam, you can make a map that would take hours of game play to walk across, they said you can make sort of mini games/mods out of the Cryengine that can get as huge as Racing maps, or even more amazing Dogfight maps that would require a huge sky/surface area to do this in
As all those people saying Crysis does not have anything for MP, again... go check out the new Obsidian Edge 2 mod being designed for this game, I'm quite certain that it will make this game worthwhile to play.

Re: Shame about Crysis...
It would have been MUCH better if there were more Scantly clad Korean Chicks... OR even if the Aliens had been abducting the Swedish Bikini team for "experiments" and were holding them on the island.. At least the Nice Grafix would have been put to better use!!
