The effectiveness of tactics in Darkfall discussion

Hi, my name is Valore Magee in-game and I am apart of the Duchy of Wessex. At first I did not want to join this hugely populated clan but somehow found myself committing my service to them because of their realistic feudal structure and use of drills and formations. Although when I finally arrived at their capital of their kingdom and we were moving out to raid an enemy town, we were surprised with a raid against our own.

What follows was a true mêlée. A mêlée where close combat between disorganized fighters occur if you go by definition. I was disappointed with the lack of leaders, coordination, and formation among our forces. Even more so when they enemy was coming into our Keep and we didn't even organize a defensive line in the narrow stairways.

Maybe it was a bad day for the guys. Maybe not. Perhaps the appointed leaders were fighting all day long leading teams. Whatever happened we had the potential firepower, maneuver, protection, but without proper leadership that is not by rank but by actual leading, our forces were disorganized. Perhaps holding ground in Darkfall is not that important but I see it as a good indication on your combat effectiveness especially if its trying to hold your own defensive fortications.

So what i'm trying to get here is a discussion from intelligent minds about the potential effectiveness of using old style tactics such as a shield wall, schiltrom, volley fire as well as focused fire from archers and mages, testuedos, phalanxes, and any other tactical movement or formation.

From all my reading and brainstorming, the only way to effectively use tactics practically is to outnumber the opponent. While outnumbering the opponent by itself will help you win, I still think using tactics will help reduce your casualties and friendly fire as well as concentrate your firepower onto individual soldiers.

So what do you think? If you were a general and had all the properly trained soldiers, sergeants, and support units do, are there any ideal ways you would deploy your forces in different situations such as attacking a castle, defending a fort, and ambushing enemy units?

Re: The effectiveness of tactics in Darkfall discussion

I think at the moment the tactics that are being used are very basic. A lot of players have come from games where the tactics were very dry and formulaic (class type 1 does A whilst class type 2 does B with no deviation). For example in DAoC PvE the tanks would form a wall and use their ablties to pull mobs, whilst the spell casters would try and reduce the enemy dps by stunning enemies, whilst the healers wold heal the tank - ie all very cookie cutter.

Games without strict classes are only limited by what the players are equipped for at that time, and what skills they have developed. For example in Eve one of our best attacks was when we had equipped light fast ships for a war and basically went into the enemy's base system and started swinging our balls around. As pedicted they tooled up ino heavier ships that we could not cope with and began to chase us. What they didn't know was that we had planted a load of large ships of our own a few systems away, and whilst one of our guys caught their attention the rest of us switched ships and caught and killed all the enemy.

Darkfall is similar in that you are not restricted to just one style. I think there are 5 important factors that make tactics viable in darkfall:

    a) Lack of persepective to the side and rear that allows enemies to flank you, combined with no auto targetting, combined with varied terrain.
    b) Separate front and back hitboxes, with the back hitbox taking about 50% more damage than the front.
    c) Ability to parry that reduces the amount of damage you take from the front, at the cost of stamina, but drains the enemy stamina if they hit you.
    d) Stamina mechanism.
    e) Good gear taking just long enough to get that morale can play a part in a fight.

At the simplest level just having a few guys tie up / pin down the enemy whilst you flank them and start hitting them from the rear is an extremely effective strategy.
