What race are you interested in playing?

Ok, so we have had some chat on what race we are interested in playing. Just as a quick recap - it is possible to play racial combinations that get on and still run a city, but it would not work if we choose races that hate each other. For that reason one rule that would be imperative is that we decide on a racial choice, or combination of choices, that allowed us to run a city.

This poll is to get some feedback as to which race is the most popular. Please only vote if you are interested in playing this game. You may vote on as many options as you like, so if you really do not mind what race you play then vote for all of them.

I didn't really see anything that told me what they specialized in. Is that located anywhere?

It seems to me the most succesful PvP guilds will be made of diverse Prestige Class players. In that regard the Human/Dwarf/Elf combination makes sense, but could be a little less than exciting. There are no restrictions on what the different races my learn skill wise, but the Prestige classes will have some specialties, and of course limitations.

I voted for all but the freaky aliens.

I voted for Mahrim and Orks since I think it opens up interesting tactical opportunities for using the Mahrim as a type of cavalry (they don't need mounts) and the sheer power of orks in combat.

I'm boring and somewhat goody-two-shoes when it comes to races. I picked the top 3, and prefer human.

I chose Mahirim and Ork - sounds like that combination will produce a great competitive atmosphere. Also, I may be looking too far into this, but I think if we choose Mahirim/Ork, we avoid both the younger crowd who gravitates toward the "pretty" races (Mirdain and Human), as well as the 'me against the world' crowd who might default to Alfar, since they're seen as the solo race.

Uh, not to say that everyone who chooses those races would act in such a manner, of course

I've already stated this, but I'd really look forward to playing as Mahirim and Orcs. That just seems the most interesting to me.

Re: What race are you interested in playing?

As far as race interactions go, what races absolutely won't work with each other? I looked through the site, and so far all I found was that human NPCs hate Orks and Alfar, and Alfar NPCs hate anything non-Alfar. I know that PCs can tolerate whoever, it just comes down to what the NPCs will do.

Would be cool if we were able to let people play among 3-4 races instead of worrying about only having 1 or 2 that would work well together.

    Faction 1: Human, Mirdain, Dwarves
    Faction 2: Ork, Mahirim
    Faction 3: Alfar

I think it's a bit more complicated than that, though - I've read that Humans and Mirdain are friendly with eachother, but have a "neutral" relationship with dwarves. This could mean that a Human would take a larger alignment hit for killing a Mirdain than he would for killing a Dwarf, but that's just speculation. Mahirim and Ork are also considered "neutral" to eachother.

Another point to consider: Faction 1 will likely be the majority by far, so if we choose one of the other two factions, we'll have PvP action ready for us more often

Re: What race are you interested in playing?

Well, something to consider is that it's not just PvP between the different factions, but also PvP within the factions themselves. It seems there is the possibility of as much in-fighting as anything else. I'm sure there will be humans fighting humans, orks fighting mahirim and all that jazz. We can be noble knights or sleazy swashbucklers. :P

Where "factions" come in is with the NPCs in any town/stronghold that we set up; they're likely to attack PCs from the group they dislike. I find it odd that the website said human NPCs are likely to attack orks, but didn't mention a thing about the mahirim (who are essentially in the same faction). Would this give us the possibility of having a group comprised of human/mirdain/dwarf/mahirim that wouldn't be attacked by our NPCs?

From a personal perspective, only the humans here appeal to me, boring as that might seem. I'm sure others are in a similar boat with one race or another. I'd like us to have as much variety as we can without pigeon-holing people into one or two races for the sake of functionality.

Re: What race are you interested in playing?

PvP within the factions themselves will only really take place when an evil-aligned character or guild is around. We could be evil and allow for a mix of factions in the guild, but that raises complications with using racial capitals and NPC cities, and setting a focused goal for the guild overall.

RPGVault has a rather good article on it. Unfortunately, I can't post hyperlinks until I have 15 posts, but here's some quotes It's Darkfall Peek #28 if you're interested in reading the whole article on their site.

    ...
Players have the freedom to ignore these dynamics and form clans using members of opposed races, but this is going to be troublesome to manage due to the attitude other players and NPCs will have against them. Evil characters, being outcasts, may have an easier time associating with their evil counterparts from enemy races.
    ...
There may be infighting among the Mirdain, for example, but the Orks will always be looking for a way to exploit this. Mirdain territory falling into Orkish hands may limit Mirdain options, resources etc. Forming clans made up of racial enemies is possible; however, in these kinds of alliances, there are often mutually inconsistent goals - one party's success might undermine the ability of the others to achieve their ends.

Re: What race are you interested in playing?

If we start out or get large enough we could just run try to control two seperate city's for the two faction's people want to play. That should be a goal of ours, besides taking over the entire Darkfall world. I do think we should try to diversify and not deny anyone the chance to play whatever character they want. Having fun is the name of the game. I am sure we can work something out.
