Newbie question about DoD Source
Hello,
Lately I'm seeing all these "source" games. I played a lot of Day of Defeat (that was long time before I found TG, my most favorite map is dod_charlie but sadly most people hate to play it) and now I see TG is playing this game too.
However, what is the difference between HL: DoD and DoD Source? And do I need a new cd key (I still have the one I got from Half Life 1 long time ago)?

Re: Newbie question about DoD Source
HL: DoD was built using the Half-life engine.
Source: DoD was built using the Source engine (Half-life 2).
You need a valid copy of half-life 2 to play DoD. If you have it, you will see that DoD is available for download in the Steam Games Browser. If not, you will need to purchase a copy of Half-life 2.

Ah thanks, that explains a lot.

By the way, how many TG players play Dod Source approximately? I mean, are there enough to have a decent game each day or so as we have in BF2?

Re: Newbie question about DoD Source
No! This is wrong. You can buy DoD:S separately and if you buy HL2 in a store you will not get DoD:S for free. They are two separate games that happen to be made by the same company, use the same engine and can be purchased together or separately via steam.

Re: Newbie question about DoD Source
The server handles 20 players, and is usually full in primetime. We are also getting alot of pub players that come off the old DoD, and alot of them don't need to be told to play tactically. That's a relief.

I can think of no reason why someone should not buy the whole thing.
I'm enjoying the whole HL2/CounterStrike Source/Day of Defeat/Dysptopia thing far more than BF2.
Of course, I am an admin, so I'm biased.

Re: Newbie question about DoD Source
I would have bought the silver package, but BF2 takes up most of my online gaming time and Civ IV and Armed Assault are coming out soon. So I just bought DoD:S by itself from steam for $20.

Re: Newbie question about DoD Source
Only 20 people? Why not more, didn't the old HL support up to 64 players or so? I imagine 10 players per side on dod charlie wouldn't be as exciting as 40+.

Are all classic maps still available in DoD Source btw (such as Charlie)?
Oh, if I understood your correctly, doesn't that mean if I just buy Dod Source for $20 I can play it without having HL2? Or does it still require me to buy HL2?

Re: Newbie question about DoD Source
This I do not know. Thus far, 10/10 is pretty intense, and we are still gaguing the response to the game before we go further.

Re: Newbie question about DoD Source
I've played in some servers that support 32 and even 50 players at once. The maps are kind of small for those numbers though so it can become a stalemate. 32 is probably max to keep the gameplay flowing.

Re: Newbie question about DoD Source
You can get DoD:S for $20, but I strongly suggest your purchase the silver HL2 package ($60) from steampowered.com. With that you get HL2, CS:S, DoD:S, and the entire back catalog of valve games. The silver package will give you the ability to play 4 games hosted by TG (Natural Selection, CS:S, DoD:S, and Dystopia)

Currently, only anzio, avalanche, donner, and flash are included. Charlie and Caen are great maps for massive amounts of players though, hopefully they'll make it.

Re: Newbie question about DoD Source
Seconded. And given our history, future Steam powered titles will likely be hosted here as well.

Re: Newbie question about DoD Source
"back catalogue" probably means it includes all the classic games such as HL1 + Addons? If so, do these games have cd audio tracks? The old games (HL1 and at least opposing force) had these on the cd.
