ARMA players - how does the map work?

On some servers, I seem to be able to spot myself and friendlies on the ingame map. I've got some questions.

    1. Some dots, including my own are blue. I noticed some that were yellow/orange. Does that indicate whether they're survivor/bandit?

    2. How do I know whether a server has this advanced feature turned on? Are there advanced server settings I can see, or can server admins only choose "normal / expert / veteran" and that determines things like crosshairs, map features, and 3rd person view?

    3. Under what conditions does a dot show up for another player? I was circling the airfield and I had a constant blue dot for another friendly in the area, though he wasn't moving at all. So I'm sure it's unaffected by movement. Yet another time, about 6 yellow/orange dots just "disappeared". I was of the 'this is a load of bandits' persuasion and hightailed it out of there pronto.

    4. Any other map features ARMA players want to educate us on?

    Thanks!

The yellow dots are Zeds but not every Z appears on the map.
I have never been close enough to another player on a noob server to see the blue dot.
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to,

Callous had it. Technically everyone is considered on the same team... so Survivor/Bandit are blue as well.

expert/veteran settings never allow this, I think it can be toggled with normal and in rookie its always on... all the time

You have to get 'sight' on them. Its about a radius of sight and for some time you'll see them on the map.
