Global and Side
So new arma 2 betas seem to be improving VON to the point where it is much more reliable and even seems to add a feature so that the server admin can block global and side chat!
Anyone for non teamspeak play? I know that a lot of tg style teamplay (in its current tg dayz form) would be lost but hey the truth is that last time I looked in my backpack I didn't see a magic radio.
Perhaps this feature would open up the possibility to script in cb radios as a findable item in game.
What's your guys opinion? If global and side can be blocked and radios were added in game a discoverable items would you like to abandon teamspeak?
I would
PS another cool feature if the above came into fruition would be in game message boards like customizable no trespassing signs that you can pin to trees or barns.

Re: Global and Side
VoN hasn't worked for me the last four times I've tried it on TG's server, so don't rely on it too heavily. Having a working local text chat is crucial if you plan to block global and side.

Re: Global and Side
are you running the newest beta version of Arma 2? If your not then you won't get the benefits that I set out above. You can get it at: http://www.arma2.com/beta-patch.php

Re: Global and Side
@TacticalJim - We are running the latest beta version on the server and will continue to use the latest as Sixupdater shows. Go to the Mods list and scroll down to the bottom and ck the version number and you will see for yourself. I know the comms situation is a little hectic for some but there is a good system set in place by some experienced people already and keep in mind that this mod is still only in Alpha and the Von status will improve in time. In the mean time bear with us all and work the TS system we have in place and as things improve with Von, adjustments will be implemented in a managable way.

I thought VON was disabled on our server all together?

Re: Global and Side
It could be Whiskey, since Von has been fubar from the beginning I haven't used it at all and won't try until it is announced that the Devs have addressed that issue. Apophis might have it turned off so that there aren't any accidental usage.

You can have individual channels disabled.
Just a heads up

No I do not want to abandon TS. It is one of the backbones of our community.

Re: Global and Side
I totally agree with Warlab, TS has massive benefits to the community as a whole whilst being used in DayZ. It should be promoted not sidelined.

Re: Global and Side
Perhaps I worded it wrong, I didn't mean totally abandon TS...I just meant that the gameplay would be much more immersive with VON if it relied on direct voice and a radio system (CB radios or something like that that can be found in the Dayz world).
I also wasn't complaining about the way we have it set up right now...I like playing with you guys. But I also think that if the possibility arose to use only VON while in game that it could create an entirely different feel in the game. Imagine coming across someone in game, saying hi in direct voice, becoming friends or realizing they are TG also, and the other guy says "hey man we are operating on radio channel 8...here is a radio", and then hands it to you.
Just thought it would be cool.
Simple fact of the matter is that using TS changes the game, not in a necessarily bad way, but it does take away some of the survival style of gameplay.

Re: Global and Side
In ArmAII PR I squad lead largely without TS. Generally speaking only a few SLs would need to be in teamspeak and von for the most part worked out really well.
If VON is made to be 99% reliable, heck yeah! I love the extra immersion and even situational awareness directional chat offers.
I can't help but remember a time in PR:BF2 that accidentally disabled server side VOIP and we were stuck with mumble only comms. At the time mostly everyone was in mumble and without a 'squad' force center there needed to be 'runners' who would relay messages.
Honestly, working directional VOIP is something Dayz really needs.http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/08/science/earth/global-temperatures-highest-in-4000-years-study-says.html?_r=0

Re: Global and Side
TS has benefits outside of the game, ones which benefit the community as a whole and help it grow. Mumble whilst functional really hurt PR at TG in that sense as it killed TS usage. DayZ is bringing lot's of new people into this community and bringing together players from different titles who maybe have never spoken. TS helps us bond with other community members. Without the background of TS we are just a server, like any other. Be careful what you wish for.
