Re: New player...
For a Cleric you want no less then 19 Wis at Level 20 (i know cap is 10 now, but will be 20 adventualy). You can start with a stat of 16 or so and up it on each Level (which is more stat effective because you pay 3 for each at creation and only 1 at each for the level, therefore you can get 3 stats out of the 6 points instead of 2). You need a 19 for L9 spells, which is why 19 is a must.
Cha is next most important stat, it was what your Turn Undead (and therefore the Turn Undead Trade off enhancements) is based on. After this i recomend taking a 12+ in either str or dex, so you can help fight when your not healing. I recomend 12 dex (for +1 AC when using Full Plate) and 12 or 14 str for weapon fighting. Int is generaly not important, you only REALLY need the heal skill.
I think my cleric in beta started as:
str12
dex12
con12
int8
wis16
cha14
I dont remember exactly, but with those by 10 you can have 18 wis, (every 4 levels you get another stat, so at 12 you can have 19 and it still gives you 2 extra stats to play with). I personaly like a ballanced character, it makes you overall more effective. (you may have a few extra points, i recomend Con or Str, anymore dex and you will be limiting your AC by having to use less then heavy armor)
This build style is not for just sitting back healing, you will likely shoot a few arrows and throw a few swings at enemies. You are at your best when you do everything. Do note, however, that this can be a tricky build because it forces you to multi task ALOT. Fore a more healing central build leave str/dex at 10, keep con at 12, int 8, Cha at 14ish and put everything else into wis for mana (spell points).
just my 2cp
