Italicised brackets mine.Anyways, after downloading HL2 (DM) and Dystopia, there's no need to run the fix because a) it doesn't work properly and you have to search the forums to find out what it does wrong, then alter your config by hand anyway; and b) my method is (I think) neater.
Assuming you've installed Dystopia to C:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\Dystopia, do the following:
Within the Steam launcher, right-click on the "HL2 (DM)" entry under "Games", and simply change the "Advanced Launch Options" to:
-game "C:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\Dystopia"
exactly like that with the quotes and everything. If it's in a different directory just substitute the directory name above. To save yourself some typing, just navigate (in explorer) to the dir with dystopia in it and copy-paste the location from the address bar (this will eliminate any chance of typos).
You should now find that clicking the "HL2 (DM)" link within Steam launches Dystopia instead.

No, you can play v1 with literally any source game, it does not matter which actual game you have as long as you have the "Source SDK Base" tool installed.
