    Public Service Annoucement: Katana Usage

I've decided to spend time to summize TG Dystopia's standing position on a few issues that have caused some derision with the community. These threads will basically boil down to: "How and why we play the way we do." I feel that at the least, they'll let me get a few thoughts out of my mind and maybe promote a bit of understanding. So, here goes:

TG Dystopia's stance on Katana Usage

Many questions have been brought up about TG Dystopia's lack of enthusiasm about the rampant use of the Katana on the TG Dystopia server. I would like to clear up a few misconceptions about this situation.

TG at no point has banned the use of the katana, even its exclusive use in deference to other weapons. TG is aware that there are times the Katana is the best choice of weapon for certain circumstances.

What TG does have an issue with is what commonly refered to as "kill whoring." While killing the opposing team's players CAN help achieve the objective of the map, it is not nearly as important as working with your team to actively achieve goals. In fact, I've seen games in which a team has been massively behind in scores and kills, yet still win the map.

This differs from say, Counter-Strike: where killing the enemy team ensures success. And even on TG CS, frags are not the objective.

The issues with exclusive Katana usage is that it's usually (notice the term "always" is not used) practiced by players who are unconcerned with the team. They are concerned about having the most kills and/or the Katana award. This type of player does not care about his team and will be removed.

There are a few players on the server who use the Katana effectively, while communicating with their team, to achieve map objectives. This player, following the will of the team, can be effective and will not be "harassed" by the admin staff.

But, just as the player with the GL who spams grenades into an area filled with both enemies and teammates, the weapon may not always be the best choice for the situation. The problem with a player who uses the Katana to the exclusion of all other weapons is that they are usually unable or unwilling to use another weapon. There are times that a team does not need a stealth light to get behind enemy lines and silently kill enemies. That person needs to be able to take on another role to help the team to the best of their ability. Not doing so will result in administrative action.

I don't like the last line. That's a personal opinion and not a TG stance. No one is required to have a breadth of skills, and for you to say something to that effect in an official statement like this sends the wrong message.

NS Game Officer. TF2 Admin. BF2 Admin / Scripter. PM with issues.
Tempus: Pokerface is nailing it right on the head. Everyone who is arguing against him is simply arguing against reality.

<LazyEye> yeah when I play on TG the server digs though my trash

Arm yourself with knowledge: TG NS TF2 BF2

I removed it, as it was more of an afterthought.
