How to make squad play easier in ETQW

I have an idea for squad play, This should work well on scrims and I whould like to see it tested out with a full server.

Before the round strats you take the warmup time to organize the amound Soldiers,Engineers, ect units that your tema will have, those classes each join a fireteam specivic for that class.

For example: this should helps with one fireteam of soldiers who will work on getting a genenrator blown, a fireteam of engineer who will work on defending that team by building turrets and planting mines. A field ops team who will work on artillery to help cut off enemy reinforcements. A medic team to keep everyone alive and a spec opps team to give sniper/vehicle/radar support.

Just my €0.02, anyone willing to work with this idea?

Re: How to make squad play easier in ETQW

I dont know how important fireteams really are in ETQW. More important is the general make up of the team. Each team will have roughly 10-12 guys. The developers have stated the intended team size is 12v12. Although the maps are large, the action is concentrated in one spot.

I see the ideal fireteam size of about 3 guys focusing on a single mission.

At the start of a round, what people tend to do is select the class they will spawn in with. you can then see what the team, rather the the fireteam needs.

it is a process of self organization that would clearly be helped by VOIP. fortunatly, your team can recover from a bad class loadout quickly to get the job done.

Indeed. Each time you die is a chance to change your weapon/class. The entire team is basically funneling into whatever main objective there is to accomplish. Thus far I haven't seen any wanton "statpadding" or "scorehunting" or whatever. Even though you could certainly play that way and still help the team.

Waht I am trying to point out is that if everyone knows what role is assigend to a certain class your teamwork could greatly improve, It is not as if once you have picked a certain class you should stick with it the entire round, but you should know what you can do best at that moment.

Re: How to make squad play easier in ETQW

The game puts a star above the class that will most help the team. This feature is a wonderful way to focus the teamwork. If something needs to be built, there will be a star above the engy class.

what is a bit touger is deciding how many soldiers, medics and FOs you need. VOIP would be ideal for that at the beggining of a round.

for now, text chat to the team that you need a medic to support you and you may just find one that follows you around like a puppy.

when I play medic, I follow the guy that is going to complete the objective, when I play soldier, I cover the guy that is going for the objective.

When I play field ops, I try to wipe out the enemy defending the objective.

It is all about knowing what is needed. at the start of the round, things are often a mess. good teams will self organize quickly into a good loadout of classes.

I think that people are forgetting that this game does not have such a big focus on team work. this isn't a battlefield game guys.

It has just as large a focus on teamwork, it just handles the concept differently than the Battlefield series. Squads aren't really all that important. The fireteams seem to exist solely to help you keep track of where your friends are.

This could not be further from the truth. The focus of the game is teamwork. It has as much, if not more teamwork than BFx. I do agree that it is a different game than BFx however.

Re: How to make squad play easier in ETQW

So what about ETQW makes you think it has less of a focus on teamwork than BFx? This is exactly the perception I tried to dispel in this thread.

Re: How to make squad play easier in ETQW

I love the way teamwork is done in this game, the whole objective based system and tactics (as in my OP) is based on teamwork and teambuilding. You might not have VOip, but that does not mean people can't work together, just look at BF1942 and BFV. You could olso compare it with assault mode in unreal tournament or MOHAA multiplayer.

just thinking more about this after talking to you on TS.

AS we get more regular players, I think this idea may be feasible. as it is right now, we have perhaps 3 of the 24 people playing on VOIP. I try to ask people to take certain classes over text, and as we continue developing the teamwork on the server, we will be able to organize better. eventually, a highly organized game is our goal.
