Orange Box...or Enemy Territory: QW?
Quote IGN, it is a good time to be a gamer. October and November are about to bring out fresh new games. Most proiminent among them will be (and is) the Orange Box, ET: QW, Crysis, Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, and Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor.
However, the two of them, OB and ET: QW I can now get either one---and I don't know what to decide. Yes, eventually I'm going to get both but I want to get one or the other first. I know that you guys will state your opinion based off of personal judgment, experience, or preference, but I want to hear what you guys think anyway.

Re: Orange Box...or Enemy Territory: QW?
Tough choice. You will get a biased opinion here, so it would be better to post in the general forum. I prefer ET:QW because there is so much more you can do with it. TF2 is extremely fun and is the most polished game I've played; Valve just did everything right with it. I like it more for casual playing where I don't feel like thinking too much. I prefer Quake Wars overall since there's much more depth to it, and has a huge potential for inventing creative tactics.
Portal's fun and has some delightful gimmicks, but is too short and much too easy. Ep 2 is fun. It's better and longer than Ep 1.Last edited by Curlydave; 10-16-2007 at 02:37 AM.

Yeah... you'll get a load of people convincing you to purchase Quake Wars in here (I certainly recommend QW, having bought and played both TF2 and QW).

Re: Orange Box...or Enemy Territory: QW?
I'm one who played the QW beta but have only boughten the Orange Box. Playing the QW beta through steam was one of the worst experiences I've had as a gamer.
I am jaded, but I'm all for the Orange Box. You don't have to rely on multiplayer only so you can play single player.
TF2 has such solid gameplay it's probably all I'll be playing for the longest time. Portal has some nice challenges after the normal story line that will keep you busy for a while.
If you don't have HL2 or Ep. 1 I'd say the Orange Box is easily your best choice, but even if you have it's still my choice. I enjoy the variety way too much.

If you have played HL2..then QW... (the rest is not worth it.. IMHO)

Re: Orange Box...or Enemy Territory: QW?
Half-Life 2 + Half-Life 2: Episode 1 + Half-Life 2: Episode 2 + Portals + Peggle Extreme + Team Fortress 2
vs
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
What the Orange Box gives you:- One of the best Single Player games out there (Half-Life 2) and 2/3 of of it's sequel (Episode 1 and 2)
- Two amazing puzzle-like games, although one is really short and the other is more of a demo.
- The best multilayer game out to date
What Enemy Territory: Quake Wars gives you:- The worst in-game animations you have ever seen in any game.
- 30 FPS cap.
- Cheap annoying crack jumping jetpacks
- No VOIP
- A wide variety of vehicles that can be destroyed by small arms fire
- Amazing "asymmetrical" battles in which Strogg Medics are slightly different to the GDF Medics and everything else is practically the same.

Re: Orange Box...or Enemy Territory: QW?
You could easily make a more realistic list that includes actual flaws in the game, and TF2 would come out on top easily; It's a very polished game, while ET:QW has it's annoying quirks and problems. However, the problems aren't important if you like the fundamental game more.
Here's another list
What the Orange Box gives you:- Straightforward, beautifully-executed team-based game that doesn't make you think too hard and will make you smile after having a few beers with your friends.
- Some singleplayer games you'll finish in a week.
What Enemy Territory: Quake Wars gives you:- In-depth game that rewards strategy, planning and creative tactics, and gives you a huge toolbox of options to dig into. It blows TF2 out of the water in terms of depth and long-term playability. In TF2 you'll probably use every strategy in the book after the first week, but in ET:QW you'll still be finding new sniper spots a year later.
- IS NOT BATTLEFIELD, WAS NOT MEANT TO BE BATTLEFIELD AND NEVER WILL BE BATTLEFIELD.
* You could make a good list of QW's flaws that you couldn't for TF2, but your list sucks. The "asymmetrical" bit is misleading advertisement, it's not a flaw, there's nothing wrong with the JPs, there's no 30FPS cap, and you're complaining about the vehicles because you play Battlefield and they're not what you're used to. Animations and VOIP are legit concerns, but VOIP is coming in a patch.Last edited by Curlydave; 10-16-2007 at 11:53 AM.

Re: Orange Box...or Enemy Territory: QW?
I think both games have their good and bad points. Fortunately, both games are relatively glitch free so what you buy comes down to personal preference for gameplay and the people playing each game.
I suggest you continue to read around in both forums to get a feel for what people are saying about each game. Responses to this thread are going to be biased etc. Both games are popular right now with roughly equal amounts of people playing each game. If its a popularity contest you are interested in, TF2 has more TG people active in their forums and seemingly, in game.
My personal preference is for QW.
TF2 could not hold my interest for an hour.
To counter a bit of what zoopy said,
QW does not have a 30 fps cap. A simple command typed into the console removes the cap permanently. The in game animations look better than anything I have seen in any other game, tf2 included. TF2 has crack jumping scouts. Describing the asymmetry between teams as a slight differences between medics seems misguided at best.
I do not regret buying the orange box. But my least favorite game in the bundle is TF2. I think the orange box gives you more bang for your buck if you want total gaming experience, single player games included. IF I am comparing just TF2 to etqw I would purchase just etqw. I find etqw a far more satisfying experience.

Re: Orange Box...or Enemy Territory: QW?
By default it's set to 60fps at timingmethod2. For people using 8800s, unlocking it or setting it higher is a console command away. I use 90fps @ timingmethod 1.
I agree with him on that one, as a fact, not a flaw. The differences are pretty minor - there's a pretty straight counterpart for every weapon and vehicle in the game. Maybe I'm just used to Natural Selection which has huge differences in the teams, but QW seems to have purposefully equivocated most things in the game between the teams.Describing the asymmetry between teams as a slight differences between medics seems misguided at best.

Re: Orange Box...or Enemy Territory: QW?
I got both. I think there's no debating the value of the Orange box bundle but it has very limited replayability. Episode 2 will only last you about 6-7 hours and Portal should be less than than.
As much fun as TF2 is, I've played it since beta and I'm now completely bored to death with it. There aren't an overabundance of different things you can do but setting people on fire does carry some solid entertainment value.
I think ET:QW will have a much greater longevity that TF2.
The real test will be COD4 and how good it turns out.“Waiting to be awakened by some unexpected thunderous roar, never dying...the sleeping giant lives and will sleep no more”. - John Seabrook

Re: Orange Box...or Enemy Territory: QW?
Enemy Territory lacks the tactical depth of TF2. Sure Quake wars has vehicles, two opposing asymmetrical [sic] factions, huge maps and objective based game play. But its the latter that limits Quake wars tactically.
One team is always assaulting a defending team, all strategies revolve around your faction and the map. So if you are Strogg on Outskirts, then you are defending the barricade thinggy. That's all you have to do until its destroyed. GDF all you need is a crap load of Assaults to throw themselves at it until it's blown up. Therefore half your team is limited to one class.
TF2 doesn't limit the classes needed for an objective. This allows for more of tactical application to how to complete an objective based on classes alone. Also in TF2 you have to very your attacking and defending (except on the defense maps). If your entire team attacks the middle, its possible for the other team to slip a scout past and capture the point behind the attackers, nullifying their attack.
Quake Wars may have more options, but it has far less freedom.
On a side note: Saying that Quake Wars has better animation compared to TF2 is just asinine.
