What do you do in a fire fight?
After some very poor games the last couple of nights (not on the TG server mind you) I was just wondering how everyone acts when you get into a fire fight. Was just wondering as I could use some advice as 9 times out of ten I always seem to lose. Now maybe I just really suck, but I wanted some tips on how to increase my survival rate.
As it stands if it ever comes down to a straight up fire fight I am in the habit of just holding down the fire button, strafing from side to side, and hoping the other guy dies before I do. The only real way for me to ensure a victory is to peep around corners and anticipate where the other guy is via radar and pop a couple of shots in his head. This later method almost always see me out on top, but if there is just me and him/her in a western style showdown I pretty much always lose.
So what's the best way to fight? Just spray and strafe? Or would it be better to fire in bursts, or maybe immediately go prone then start firing? I've tried standing still and just spraying at them but I always die.
Thanks in advance

Re: What do you do in a fire fight?
Going prone would probably get you killed. What I do is strafe a bit and fire. If a target is at range I will bring up my sights for them. I generally try to aim for the head. Of course this makes no difference if you are a Strogg Technician. Your health starts out at 90 while ever one else is at atleast 100.
Remeber GDF players also get 5 extra HP for each medic they have (capping at 20) so that might also be a problem you are having.
Spraying does work but you may also want to try bursts.RX-78-2 Gundam EFSF Protoype Close Combat Mobile Suit Armor: Luna Titanium Armament: 2x Beam Sabers, 2x 60mm Head vulcan guns 380mm Hyper bazooka, Beam Rifle, Beam Javelin, Hyper Hammer, Gundam Hammer, shield

I am usually the one to die as well. Use grenades if they run around a corner. I try to sight as much as possible, as I am not a fan of spray and pray. Sometimes hit registration has more to do with your ping than your actual skill. Keep trying and you will find out what works best for you.

Re: What do you do in a fire fight?
One tactic that gets me a lot of kills versus deaths is attacking on a long range with a hyperblaster. Stay proned or crouched fire off short burst, the hyperblaster is a very accurate weapon when used this way. I whould rather just crouch and aim for the head in a firefight, but sometimes you get forced in a quake style strafe war.

Re: What do you do in a fire fight?
Pick your fights. If radar's up, use it to your advantage, and try to flank the other guy. Lean from behind cover, and use crouch, prone and your sights as much as possible. If I'm caught with my pants down, I'll usually just spray and pray for the head while straffing, but I like to avoid those situations as much as possible. If I'm using a hyperblaster or GPMG, I'll engage multiple enemies at once, especially if they're focused on something else, but otherwise I'll try to stay exposed to as few enemies as possible, preferably only the one I'm trying to kill. I like to stay in areas where I can quickly get behind cover so if I'm surprised, I can react quickly and hide until I'm in a good position to win the fight. This isn't really the response you're looking for, but it still might answer the question.

Re: What do you do in a fire fight?
The only really solid advise I can give you is learn to aim for the head and nothing else.
ETQW is a much faster game then BF and to win a round you must be fast (attacking) or break the momentum (defending), both cases require fast killing skill while moving.
For the attacking team this goes for the entire round. The defending team only has to stop the first wave, heal and regroup and then dig in at the objective. (that's why defending is way more popular on pubs then attacking).
For anybody that want's to be in ETQW for some time learn to aim for the head and benefit from this skill a long time, for all others hide and prone and be sneaky untill your tactics are commenly know and then be owned by people that can aim.
just my 2 cents.

Re: What do you do in a fire fight?
I try to control the engagement. The first step is to live in your minimap. In the second it takes to orient yourself to an enemy that you see on your screen you could be half dead. two things you want are cover, and room to move in case of a nade.
Allways realize that most of the time, where there is 1, there are many. 1v1 firefights are rare. even if you think it is 1v1 often it is someone off in the distance pecking away at you.
in the classic open space 1v1 at medium or less range, you want to do the dance.
left, right, left, right ect. at the apex of each left right movement, you tap fire. you are moving right or left every 200 or 300 milliseconds. (you switch direction between 1/5th or 1/3 or a second).
you want to fire just at the moment you change direction. practice this on a wall during warmup. you want to send out about 2 bullets, unscoped at the apex of each left right strafe. you should be firing roughly 4 bullets a second this way. as you get more control, you will change this up to avoid predictability. move left for a longer distance than right mix in a slight forward or backwards movement.
You can also circle strafe. you keep the target at the center of a circle that you strafe around them. if two people are circle strafing, you get the dance.
go for headshots. they end fights.

Re: What do you do in a fire fight?
Well, I'd just be repeating the great advice already dispensed here, so I'll tell you two things: Never go prone in a firefight (BF2 vets, LEARN THIS NOW. IF YOU GO PRONE IN A FIGHT, YOU WILL DIE. QUICKLY. AND MESSILY.).
Sometimes when I'm in a fight I just start running in circles shooting at everything.playing off the TG server feels like we're playing 2142 on easy mode~Fehmart

Re: What do you do in a fire fight?
there are some decen vids. another great thing you can do is get in the habit of taking demos. this is like a personal Battlerecorder for BF vets. you can then watch the game from an enemies perspective. you would be shocked at what you can learn. honestly this game has the steepest learning curve for a FPS - it just blows my mind that they can get away with this...

Re: What do you do in a fire fight?
Ok, after a few experiments taking into the advice posted here, there a couple of other things I'd like to ask. After playing round with both GPMG and the Hyperblaster, is it just me or is the Hyperblaster a lot more accurate then the GPMG? I've tried playing both offense and defense with both and the GPMG is pretty good for defense, but I find that the Hyperblaster is good for both. The only case is if I'm prone with the GPMG then it seems that all the bullets go in 1 straight line, thus making it equal to the Hyperblaster, but I hardly ever go prone it slows down my movement and reaction time too much.
The only way to ensure a victory is as a few others mentioned is to be aware of everything around. Watch the mini-map, peek round corners, scope, and go for the head. This is great for defense, just find a pillar or something at the end of a long corridor or a path that sees a lot of use, peek out and mow em down as they come. It seems that they don't even realise where I am till it's too late. This peeking method even works on offense to some degree. The only reason I don't use it all the time is that a lot of the time people are running around everywhere and I peek around the corner only to have someone run right around said corner and plug me in the head before I can react. Another reason is that when I do this I rely heavily on my mini-map which is useless if there is no radar deployed which seems to me to be far to often on pubbies.
Sorry bout the longish post, gotta get this all out before my brain shuts down. Can't remember the rest of my questions, too tired
, but I'll post them after I recharge my brain.
Thanks for the advice keep it coming!

Re: What do you do in a fire fight?
It depends. Hipfiring while standing, the hyperblaster is much more accurate. Using the sights in any position, they're both very accurate - much more so than the AR and lacerator. The GPMG benefits more from lowering your stance and using the sights; it's pretty useless hipshooting unless the enemy is right in your face. If you want to see for yourself, join an empty server, (Help seed TG when it's empty
) and experiment with both against a wall in different positions. I've been playing this game for a while, and can't tell you which is more accurate prone/crouched while using the sights, because they're pretty close. The GPMG might feel less accurate because the weapon physically shakes more, but I think that's just visual. The GPMG spread seems to increase more during sustained firing than the hyperblaster.
While we're on the subject, these two weapons are much deadlier in firefights than every other infantry weapon in the game, with the exception of the rocket launcher/obliterator in some situations. I'm much less choosy of firefights when using them, because it's so easy to mow down enemies. At close range, they don't provide much of an advantage over the AR/lac because they'll both kill very quickly, but at medium to longer ranges while standing still, they'll destroy lesser-armed enemies. Having a radar greatly affects how much damage you can do with them, because it ensures that you won't be surprised, and can hopefully drop the enemy before they notice you or can react. They're fantastic for engaging multiple (preferably unsuspecting) targets at once. Even when attacking, it's better to get into a good position, and letting the enemies wander into your line of sight. This is a useful tactic for any weapon, but especially with the hyperblaster/GPMG. It's important to keep in mind that if you're chasing a fleeing enemy, or want to surprise someone, (coming to them instead of letting them come to you) don't hesitate to pull out the machine pistol or lightning gun.LLJK-Domino in game

Re: What do you do in a fire fight?
The hyperblaster is more accurate then the GPMG, but it has a annoying startup delay on first fire.
You can work around that delay by constantly tapping the fire key to keep the barrels rotating, but that would require you to move with a heavy weapon which means turtle speed. The GPMG instantly starts fireing so when you move across the map there is no need to keep the main weapon in hands, just switch to knive or pistol for extra speed and switch back to main when an enemie appears.
So onces again kudos to SD on the creative balance efforts.
I don't use the two very much because I force myself to get better with the AR and Lac first before grabbing a spray type weapon...
And maybe I misunderstand Curlydave's statement on the accuracy of the Hyper or GPMG, but no way are they more accurate then the AR or Lac...more deadly maybe, but not more accurate.
Oh and listen for the KLONG while shooting, because three in a row makes your E-peen grow....

i always dance and lean
and shoot in bursts to the head
spray from time to time of course. , but if ranged def. bursts.
scoped assault rifle REALLY helps, shoot in bursts.
