    had an awful time...

i'm brand-spankin new to etqw and attempted to play tonight. my awful time had nothing to do with TG, but with how confusing this game was. i even d/l a tutorial and watched that. i need to get into a fireteam (which i dont know how to do) and learn from some of our experienced players. is there a good time saturday that tg'ers come out to play...? i hope i can become a useful member of this community.

Hey turtle. We are here to help. A good idea to avoid frustration is to try it out with some bots first.

First things first, you have to learn some basic controls. Check out your key bindings. You need to bind keys for VOIP, these are unbound by default. You need figure out what buttons bring you to the limbo menu so you can select classes. You can interact with the fireteam system by the default key KP_ENTER.

Feel free to hit me up on xfire some night if you are looking for a walk through. I am around most nights at my computer.

    Re: had an awful time...

I agree that it's a pretty complicated game, but I really like that it is. It reminds me of Tribes 2. That game took me months to learn, and I was still picking up tricks from my teammates a couple years later.

One thing I need to do is print out a list of the voice binds (middle mouse click) and tape it to the side of my monitor. Tribes 2 had a similar system and that's just what I did back then to learn how to talk to people. This was before VOIP. Later we used Roger Wilco and then Teamspeak, but the voice binds were still necessary for those without a VOIP client, and T2'ers still talk to each other forums with the 3-letter binds. For example VGH is "voice/general/Hi!", a standard greeting. (BF1942 had a similar system using the function keys.)

There's a few non-obvious things when first playing ETQW. The hardest one for me was finding the key to get in and out of vehicles: "G". Then "F" (use) is used to do just about everything else, from switching vehicle seats to deploying mines to popping your parachute to repairing team assets.

Yes it can be very frustrating your first time out. Heck we are all still learning new things about this game. But if you stick with it you will be rewarded with outstanding game play and a very good community. I am on usually early afternoon and would be happy to let you be my target dummy...umm to show you around that is.

Yeah I think BC killed me today But I didn't have an aweful time I just got back up to be teamkilled 3 more times

I'm still learning my keys bigtime. The way I type I am just as bad setting up my keys. I think I'm getting closer though. What I have been doing is I try to set all my keys just like I have them in all the games I play. It seems to be added trouble but it pays off. Good luck

    Speaking of typing, the most frustrating thing I find is that the game transposes my chat messages. I end up having to t y p e v e r y d e l i b e r a t e l y.

thx for the responses. i'll get on tomorrow and try to hook up with someone. yeah, the key bindings are a little goofy. i bind them to all other fps i play, but then there are prob 10 extra commands that i need to place somewhere. gonna take some experimenting. also, is there a way to see how many people are playing on TG server without typing the ip address and entering the game?

You can check to see who is on the server by going to the list of servers in the game. Press the filter button found at the top of the screen and type tacticalgamer in the server name spot. It will then give all servers that has that name, though I think this community is the only one that has a server named Tacticalgamer. Then just highlight it and it will give you information about the server at the bottom of the screen, like what map it is on, how many people and the list of their names etc.

The initial learning curve is steep, 3 training videos really helped me and then I realised what the game is about and what to do, for the vids click here (watch vids 1-3)

i just played some more offline this morning, and though i'm no expert, i'm extremely impressed by this game. i think this game is complex and has HUGE potential. even with the bots being completely retarded, i had oodles of fun playing, so hopefully i can catch up with yall today.
