Whats in a name?
How long have you been going by the game name we know you as? What were your past names? Any cool reason for your name?
One of the cool escapist features of online gaming is we get to name ourselves. With so many cool and original names I got to wondering how you arrived at the name you are using now? RTCW was my first online fps. Discovering online multiplayer fps games was like discovering sex. I knew it was good, just not THIS good. I entered my real name as my player name when I installed the game. I was then embarrassed when I realized I was the only person using my real name... I then changed my name to Headshot. The game was rtcw. I was convinced it was an original name... I felt very proud of myself for coming up with it. Over the course of the next few months I realized headshot was not really cutting it as a name due to the unoriginality factor... I then changed my name to sc1ence for Soldier of Fortune 2. By the time I got around to playing bf2, someone had grabbed sc1ence as a name. I then went by directrealist for a while in that and NeverWinterNights. Direct Realism is a philosophical perspective on the nature of reality. It is central to my belief system as a human and a perceptual scientist. Most came to abbreviate my name as D.R. But strangers still struggled to say it when I joined some random squad in BF2. With bf2142 I went back to sc1ence and hopefully will stick with it. ![]()

Re: Whats in a name?
'Morph' in DC (I don't even remember why I chose that)
'Exploding_Silver' in BF2 (Silver had gone and gamespy had a suggest name button, after 5-6 clicks 'Exploding_Silver' came up and I liked it) 'Silver.7' in 2142 ('Exploding_Silver' was too long for the 2142 player name after TG IHS tags) 'Silver.7' in ETQW FFoW I may go back to 'Exploding_Silver'

Re: Whats in a name?
First started playing FPS with the coming of counterstrike, during which I used a bunch of weird and varying names. Some of the ones I can remember being, blakpanther, the machine, and big kev. They were all nicknames I had managed to pick up during high school.
Then me and a bunch of school friends made a sort of clan name thing which we would use when we were at the local internet cafe. We were known as [The C**ts] (censored it for those with sensitive eyes :P) and I was smallc**t. Well that didn't really last too long as we got bored of that scene in short order. Left fps for awhile came back with CS: Source and played with random names till one day I just got bored with the camping and watching everyone else camp and decided from now on I would be the first one in and if a I die screw it. Thought of the name "bulletfodder" since that was what I basically was being most of the time, and that's what I been using since. Depending on how FFoW turns out and if I get I'll probably consider changing it, as I'm getting tired of this one. |

Re: Whats in a name?
I needed a name for some online account, I think maybe Yahoo. The one I wanted was taken. I recalled reading the book "The Hackers Dictionary" (based on the online Jargon File) in the early 80's, an entertaining account of the early days of online computer use, and went thumbing through it for an account name.

Re: Whats in a name?
westyfield in Medal of Honour: Allied Assault (my first online FPS), chosen by me, my brother and our dad because of the name of his car (westfield). A bit sad, I know, but we were totally stuck for names. Since then it's always been a variant of westyfield, for BF2 it's westyfield2, for 2142 it's westyfield3 and for everything else it's westyfield.

Re: Whats in a name?
Never stuck with any name for long. My current one I got by looking up a list of 1000 most common names in the 1900's, going to the end of the list and choosing one that looked interesting.
