So they won't get any beta feedback from independent server operators. That means that operating the server will probably suck for awhile until we get a chance to get our opinions in and several patches go by.

On a related note, how's the server browser look? That's usually the other thing that sucks on every game because it doesn't get any attention until after the game is released. Before that, there aren't enough servers to properly exercise it.

Maybe it's just me but that level of detail at extreme distances makes it look very artificial. When I look around irl the further something is away from me the less detail I can resolve in it. It's one of the visual cues our brains uses to determine distance.

Hey GM_Custom, you wouldn't happen to have a link to that thread would you? I'm curious to see what else they have to say about voip. I sure hope it was more than just "it's coming later".

Could be better, but at least its not like the abomination that was the original BF2 server browser. The biggest frustration I have is it doesn't seem to get the most up to date info about the server you are attempting to join. I find myself having to try 5 or 6 servers that appear to have slots open until I actually find open that isn't full. I expect issues like that to be fixed before the game hits retail, but we'll see.

If someone doesn't beat me to it, Ill try to remember to get a screenshot tonight.

The current BF2 server browser isn't exactly a joy to use, even if it's a massive improvement over the original. The developers get so focused on making it look good that they forget to put effort into making it do what it's supposed to do well. I'm sure I'm not alone in looking to alternatives like GameSpy, XFire, and All-Seeing Eye to get the job done.

I'd be happy if no server browser were provided at all, and the devs just provided good hooks so that a 3rd party could produce a decent one. For example, provide hooks to query the list of servers, server status, and to connect to a server, and allow one to easily alt-tab out to use one's favorite external search program.

nice guide there...As long as VOIP makes it in....i can see this game being played a lot here...im not sure about this, but im pretty sure there are enough people like myself that like fast, arcady type games but with some tactical elements to it....thats exactly what its like...ArmA, this is not. You have objectives (thank god no more flags) which work very well. If youre on offense, your first goal is to capture a forward spawn point...from there you can easily assault a primary target. Engy's can build guard towers which decimate infantry, field ops can call in arty...Its all very well done.

The vehicles are a bit wierd, but the strogg jump pack is just too much fun. Tip - as GDF, buiild an AA turret and watch those suckers drop from the sky...heh...You really do need some level of teamwork, as lone wolfing it just doesnt work...Although with this game, it pretty much spells out for you what your objective is, so even if youre on your own, you can still help with the overall goal.

How do the server filters work?

I'm guessing that full, empty, and bots really mean that those are false for the given server, ie. not full, not empty, and no bots.

I can see people searching for only servers with friendly fire, only those with it disabled, and both. How do you select the three different cases?

How fast does the list refresh?

How fast is the detail query for a given server?

the filters allow you to set "show", "hide", and "dont care". That allows for the three filtering possibilities. For some of the filters there isnt a difference between show and don't care, i.e. full and empty.

The list refreshes fairly quickly, but there are only a few servers so its hard to judge.

I've seen either 90 or 98 servers today.

Ive found out how important a recon class is for your team. For the simple fact that you can deploy a short range radar. Think permanent UAV. Its not that big but still...It lasts till the enemy destroys it. If i dont see a radar up, im goin recon. Plus, you can trade in your sniper rifle to a scoped rifle for when you assault the sewers. And hacking the console at the ends makes you feel all special-like And i havent even tried disguising myself yet!

Disguising is the best part. I love going behind enemy lines, and just chilling with them waiting for a nice backstab shot.

after reading more, it seems more simmilar to wolf:et than I thought. anyone that play ET and is in the beta think the two are simmilar? I thought wolf:et had some great strategy maps. there were many great custom maps for that game.

    Re: Beta Discussion

So far my favorite classes have been the technician for Strogg and the engineer for the GDF.

It almost feels like god mode when I play with the technician. Being able to turn ammo into health at anytime as the Strogg, even in the middle of a battle, then being able to resupply one's ammo and health is amazing. I love being able to create spawn hosts, makes getting into the battle much easier. Once the easy upgrades start rolling in, sprint boost, 25 health upgrade, extra ammo, more med/ammo packs, the advantage only grows.

The engineer for the GDF is just awesome. I love deploying the mines to guard the forward spawns and for defending choke points like the sewers. The deployable tear infantry and vehicles apart when set in certain locations. The grenade upgrade is can be very handy in the sewers.
