Re: Tactical Gamer and ETQW
If the game play if ETQW is similar to RTCW:ET then yes, it will be arcade style run and gunning. So what? Sometimes you want to feel like you've been strapped into a powersuit and run straight at the enemy with your guns blazing and come out alive at the end. However, just like with BF2142 there will be a serious place for tactics and strategy within the game that will make games without any organized teamplay seem stupid in comparison.
On Fireteams:
From my memories of RTCW:ET I can say that fireteams are very interesting and very nice for organized play. I haven't gotten around to joining the ETQW beta (and I'll probably only see it once it hits demo actually) but if its anything like the fireteams in RTCW:ET then I see some interesting possibilities for them.
I'll cover what I remember from RTCW:ET though and we can compare notes for if they carried over any of it to ETQW.
First off being in a fireteam will create a 'status box' showing the name, rank, health, location, class, and requests over every member of your fireteam. This made quick status checks and ammo/health running easier since you could quickly find and assist members.
Second, every member of your fireteam is highlighted and visible on the minimap and tactical map. Again, easy access to information that helps organize and find your squad mates.
Third, every member of your fireteam gets a squad insignia overhead that is visible to others determined by the server scripting. Default in RTCW:ET was fireteam members only, but a bit of work on the server scripts can change that to same team and all players quite easily. Having a team insignia overhead made it easier to spot friendly covert-ops in stolen uniforms so you aren't gunning down friendlies making a run for a backdoor.
Lastly, and related to the above fact, a skilled server admin can upload special insignias to create special squads with their own tag accessed with the console and some passwords. I remember a clan server we PUB raided that had an active clan on it with this kind of script. It made defense interesting when a clan squad fireteam came knocking on the door and we could see (all player fireteam flags on) 6 members of the same clan squad outside. "Oh crap alpha team is here" was the only thing that could be said over TS before we were fighting for our lives. I'm sure our IHSs would be giggling with glee if they could upload their squad patches and have those patches displayed proudly to everyone if they're in a squad fireteam so everyone and anyone knows just who exactly is kicking their ass and taking names. My sanity is not in question...
It was a confirmed casualty some time ago.
Light, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I had to kill because they ticked me off.
