Here my fellow TG alumns is a place to put your random thoughts.

To short cut any accusations of me stealing intellectual property, I own roughly 4000 books and I have built a library in my home. I have a fetish for owning books, and even if I have it in electronic format, I purchase the hard copy as well.

That said, rather than scanning the books in and then converting it for my kindle ereader, I depended on demonoid for my electronic backups of books. Not really for backups but because the kindle is so dang convenient and I am anally retentive when it comes to caring for my books (I never open them to more than 90 degrees to prevent the spine from creasing). Since demonoid is on hiatus, I have been trying to find another source which has a good selection of books I can search which has some of my older, and more obscure books.

I am a firm believer in the author getting his due whether it be in software or books, and I always own the book if I download it. If someone comes on here accusing me of being some sort of leech I am likely to arch my eyebrow and do nothing. Yup, nothing :-p

Thanks!

WARNING SPOILERS

Ok folks, lets talk 2012 the Movie. What did you think? I saw it today.

I thought the computer graphics were pretty good. Maybe even ground breaking so to say, but at the same time, there were scenes that looks pretty bad, almost like a video game. Especially during that drive through downtown L.A.

And, of course, that movie had to have those cheesy moments.. like when the ground breaks between that husband and wife in the store when they were talking about how crappy their marriage is. Oh, and of course, the other 4th wheel husband had to be off'd so the star could hook back up with his children's mother. he can't cheat of course, we gotta kill that dude off. What better way than to crush him.

I did like how they showed that the Arks were built for the wealthy to survive, I think that reflects reality. Evil human nature. That's probably how it would go down in all honesty lets face it. Most of you wouldn't tell old GeneralCarver about an ark if you had a free ride on it.

What were your favorite parts?

Think we could make an ArmA 2 mission based off it? We could use the large frigate ships and college them with a few buildings to make the "arks". lol. And of course, we could develop some cheesy story to go along with it.

Logitech to buy HD video company for $405 million
The deal will let Logitech target enterprise and other business users with video conferencing products
By Nancy Gohring , IDG News Service , 11/11/2009
Logitech plans to acquire LifeSize Communications, a company that makes HD video communications equipment, for $405 million in cash, the companies said Tuesday.

Hottest mergers and acquisitions of 2009

Logitech, whose video business is focused mainly on webcams, hopes the deal will allow it to offer video communications systems for other settings besides the desktop, it said. LifeSize targets a wide range of customers including enterprises that want installations in their boardrooms, small and midsized businesses, and home office workers. It also targets education, health care and government customers.

LifeSize has 9,000 video conferencing customers in 80 countries, Logitech said.

The acquisition could put Logitech in competition with companies including Cisco, which has been pushing deeper into the telepresence and videoconferencing markets. Cisco is currently trying to buy videoconferencing provider Tandberg for $3 billion, although it has yet to secure a deal.

Logitech said it will work with unified communications and VoIP partners to encourage a more open environment in which video communications systems can interoperate.

Logitech hopes to close the deal in December subject to customary closing conditions, including antitrust approvals. If the deal goes through, LifeSize will operate as a Logitech division from its current location in Austin, Texas.

PLEASE READ THE WHOLE THING AND GIVE YOUR THOUGHTS

I am almost 100% determined to join the military despite of what my parents say. Right now, I'm wondering whether it would be smart to join before or after college because circumstances have changed to that I might not be able to participate in Advanced ROTC. Most people say college first is smart, but I have friends in the Army feeling out of place as they are over 20 while the kids they are training with are only 18 or 19. What do you guys think?

Also, considering I am going to the top private school in Massachusetts, ALL of my friends and family feel that this decision of mine is rash and totally idiotic of me but I feel like I need to accomplish something in my life. If all goes well and I get into a great college/university (e.g. Harvard, MIT-considering I don't enlist before then), do you guys think I should still join the military?

Finally, I KNOW I want to be either Infantry or an Engineer despite my awesome super smrt-ness (on purpose), would the better choice be the Army (9 week basic+AIT afterwards) or the Marines (12 week basic+wtvr else)?

I do know about the physical and mental challenges of both branches and I have been preparing. I am going to the gym as much as possible and the insane homework load in the top private school is getting me prepared (though nothing could prepare you for the mental stress of combat-I know).

This is possibly the biggest (and last if I make the wrong one...yikes) and most important decision of my life. I am only a freshman in high school but this is what I know in my heart I was born (but not raised) to do. Please read this and take it seriously because this is my life that I could be signing away and I am not looking forward to dying at the age of 21(or whatever).

Please give detailed answers :D

SUBJ/UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY MESSAGE - 10 NOVEMBER 2009//
GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. UNITED STATES MARINES REPRESENT THE BEST YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN OUR NATION HAS TO OFFER. TO BE A MARINE IS TO BE A MEMBER OF AMERICA'S WARRIOR CLASS - TO BE ONE OF THE FEW WHO STEPS FORWARD WITH THE COURAGE AND CONVICTION TO FACE WHATEVER DANGERS AWAIT. OUR NATION EXPECTS HER MARINES TO BE READY WHEN THE NATION CALLS; TO LEAVE FAMILY AND THE COMFORTS OF HOME BEHIND; TO MARCH INTO BATTLE AND THRIVE UNDER AUSTERITY; AND TO COME HOME UNDER A VICTORY PENNANT.

2. FROM AL ANBAR IN THE WEST OF IRAQ, TO HELMAND PROVINCE IN THE SOUTH OF AFGHANISTAN, OUR CORPS OF MARINES CAN ALWAYS EXPECT TO BE FOUND WHERE THE FIGHT IS TOUGHEST. SUCH IS OUR HISTORY. TODAY, AS WE WRITE THE FINAL CHAPTER ON OUR VICTORY IN IRAQ, WE WILL INCREASINGLY TAKE THE FIGHT TO THE ENEMY IN AFGHANISTAN AND ADD NEW PAGES TO OUR LEGACY IN PLACES CALLED DELARAM, NOW ZAD, AND GARMSIR. ONE DAY, WE WILL RETURN TO OUR NAVAL HERITAGE AND PATROL THE HIGH SEAS WITH OUR NAVY BROTHERS. SUCH IS OUR FUTURE.

3. AS WE CELEBRATE OUR CORPS' 234TH BIRTHDAY, WE FIRST PAUSE TO REFLECT AND PAY TRIBUTE TO THOSE MARINES WHO HAVE GIVEN THE LAST FULL MEASURE IN DEFENSE OF FREEDOM. WE EXTEND OUR DEEPEST GRATITUDE TO OUR MARINE CORPS FAMILIES - THE UNSUNG HEROES WHO ENDURE HARDSHIP AND SACRIFICE SO THAT WE ARE ABLE TO GO FORWARD AND ACCOMPLISH ANY MISSION. WE EXTEND OUR APPRECIATION TO OUR COUNTRYMEN WHO HAVE ANSWERED OUR EVERY NEED. AND WE CELEBRATE THE MAGNIFICENT MEN AND WOMEN WHO WILLINGLY AND SELFLESSLY CONTINUE TO GO INTO HARM'S WAY TO PROTECT THIS GREAT NATION.

4. TO ALL WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE, TO THOSE WHO WEAR THE UNIFORM TODAY, AND TO THE FAMILIES THAT GIVE US THE STRENGTH TO FORGE AHEAD - I WISH YOU ALL A HEARTFELT HAPPY 234TH BIRTHDAY!

5. SEMPER FIDELIS! JAMES T. CONWAY, GENERAL, U.S. MARINE CORPS, COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS//

And General Lejeune's birthday message:
On November 1st. 1921, John A. Lejeune, 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, directed that a reminder of the Corps be published by every command, to all Marines throughout the globe, on the Birthday of the Corps. Since the day, Marines have continued to distinguish themselves on many battlefields and foreign shores, in war and peace. On this Birthday of the Corps, therefore, in compliance with the will of the 13th Commandant, Article 38 United States Marine Corps Manual, Edition of 1921, is published as follows:

Quote:

"On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of the Continental Congress. Since that date many thousands of men have borne that name Marine. In memory of them it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the Birthday of our Corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history.

The record of our Corps is one which bear comparison with that of the most famous military organizations in the world's history. During 90 of the 146 years of its existence the Marine Corps has been in action against the Nation's foes. From the Battle of Trenton to the Argonne, Marines have won foremost honors in war and in the long era of tranquility at home generation after generation of Marines have grown gray in war in both hemispheres, and in every corner of the seven seas so that our country and its citizens might enjoy peace and security.

In every battle and skirmish since the Birth of the Corps, Marines have acquitted themselves with the greatest distinction, winning new honors on each occasion until the term "Marine" has come to signify all that is highest in military efficiency and soldierly virtue.

This high name of distinction and soldierly repute we who are Marines today have received from those who preceded us in the Corps. With it we also received from them the eternal spirit which has animated our Corps from generation and has long been the distinguishing mark of Marines in every age. So long as that spirit continues to flourish Marines will be found equal to every emergency in the future as they have been in the past, and the me of our nation will regard us as worthy successors to the long line of illustrious men who have served as "Soldiers of the Sea" since the founding of the Corps."

Today is veterans day. Today is the day I honor those that have fought for my freedom in our nations armed service. Today is the day to thank those that are still alive, and I want to say thanks to all of you. I know that there are vets in TG; those on Active duty, retired and probably other statuses that I don't know about. No matter what, I respect you and always support you. Despite what the rest of the country may say about you, no matter what the news, or anyone says, you do a EXCELLENT job.

While I personally, have not served, I have many friends, and family that have. From the Civil War to present day, they have given their all for the protection of my and my families freedom. You that are serving now and have served in the past, have my undying respect and gratitude for what you do and have done. No matter what one person says or does can change that. You guys have done things that no knows about in order to protect your country and mine. Thing done behind the scenes and quietly, all the way to the "big" things we hear about, the actions you take have helped preserve the liberty of these great United States.

So, to each and every one of you here at TG, I salute you. I thank you for your dedication, honor, and courage to fight for our country and liberty. No matter what happens, I will always support our troops and the sacrifices they take for this great nation and the people in it. Please accept my heartfelt thanks to all of you.

Thank you,

So for once, Google has failed me. Thus, I'm hoping someone here has the knowledge I seek.

In the NFL, the referee and the umpire have distinctive hats. The referee wears a white one compared to everyone else's black one to mark him out. In years past, I swore that the umpire had a black one with white stripes while every other official wore solid black. However, I notice that all the other officials aside from the referee now wear black hats with white stripes.

BUT, I've noticed that the umpire's hat now has what looks like fuzzy balls on either side of the cap's bill, right where the bill and the main cap join. Is there any purpose to this other than making the umpire look like a distorted Mickey Mouse? It seems really... odd.
