Dell XPS 630I
Windows Vista
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz
3325 MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT

So here's the deal...

I was playing ArmA2 today and my computer locked up mid-game, with the graphics and colors messing up big time, along with looping sound. I was unable to alt+tab or get the task manager open, so I held the power button and turned it off. When I turned the computer back on, crazy things appeared on my screen as it booted up, including blue dots everywhere, vertical bars of green, overall messed up graphical glitches. When I get to the login screen, there are 5 vertical bars about 1 inch in width each and 3 inches apart, spanning the height of my monitor. The bars themselves are kind of like "screen tears", where the pixels are all different colors of the current window I have up, and they "dance around" whenever I drag a window around or move my cursor. I literally have to drag this window so that the line of text I'm typing falls under one of the 3 inch portions of my screen that still shows up non-blurry.

I've tried multiple times to uninstall and then reinstall my display drivers, with no results - the bars remain. I'm almost completely convinced this has something to do with my drivers or graphics because of many things I've noticed. I no longer have the "Nvidia Control Panel" option when right-clicking on my desktop. Also, my windows have been minimizing and maximizing not smoothly. When my computer was working properly, when I minimized or maximized a window, it would give the appearance of "shrinking" to the task bar or "expanding" from the task bar to my desktop. Now it just disappears and appears without the animations. Also, I used to be able to hover my cursor over a window in the task bar, and a mini-window would pop up, previewing what was on that window. That no longer happens as well. Lastly, when I go to Nvidia's website and use their online tool to check what version of drivers I have, it only shows as "--", meaning it doesn't recognize that I have any drivers installed at all.

I've been using the older 182.50 GeForce drivers because they were the only ones stable with ArmA2 (the other newer drivers I was using caused crash-to-desktops).

After countless restarts, checking the cable to my monitor, and re-installations of my display drivers, I'm all out of ideas folks. Any help or advice would be appreciated more than I could possibly show through the internet.

Hell, I've even tried launching ArmA and other games after reinstalling my drivers, still with these damned bars on my screen, and it gave me this error: "Display Adapter does not support format D24S8 for X8R8G8B8."

Radeon HD 5970 sold out in a day - No surprise there. Fastest card out, and in very short supply equals empty shelves.

I was checking through the add ons for Firefox today for something that has some specific behavior.

I would like it to filter out any picture that has a name with a certain text, or links to a page with certain text in the link.

I would like it to filter out links completely that have key words as part of their name or the link they are going to.

Example: Sarah Palin is not news in my opinion, just like twitter, dancing with the stars and other newsvertisements. I'd like to be able to filter out any mention of them when browsing news sites like BBC and CNN. I've thought about using Adblock but the approach I tried is not working as I had hoped.

I don't know if this had been mentioned but I came across this program Dropbox. So it's a host server that can host up to 3 GB of your date you upload for free ! It's so simple, it makes a sharing folder on your computer and what ever you drop in there it sync with Dropbox, and you can access that date on whatever computer you want.

I've been using it and options are endless. I find it very useful for school work ( I need to access my files in classroom to present them-no more USB,pesky mails etc.), as long as you have internet on that computer you can get what is in that folder on your home computer.Of course there are payable options as well, 50 GB for 10 $ and 100 for 20$ per month.

For every friend who joins Dropbox, I'll be given 250 MB of bonus space (up to a limit of 3 GB), as long as you follow this link:
https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTMwODI4ODM5

I just thought I should let you guys know.
Anandtech as always has a very good review:

AnandTech just posted a good article with lots of tests showing how huge a boost it is:
AnandTech Tests GPU Accelerated Flash 10.1 Prerelease

Edit:
Downloadsquad.com just posted an article that has actual video reviews to show you how good this looks running on a AsRock nettop with ION. Looks REALLY REALLY good!
Adobe release Flash Player 10.1 with GPU acceleration for HD video

Now for the bad news, and I was pissed when I read it:

Quote:

 What Hardware is Supported?

As I just mentioned, Adobe is using DXVA to accelerate Flash video playback, which means you need a GPU that properly supports DXVA2. From NVIDIA that means anything after G80 (sorry, GeForce 8800 GTX, GTS 640/320MB and Ultra owners are out of luck). In other words anything from the GeForce 8 series, 9 series or GeForce GT/GTX series, as well as their mobile equivalents. The only exceptions being those G80 based parts I just mentioned.

Anything based on NVIDIA’s ION chipset is also supported, which will be the foundation of some of our tests today.

AMD supports the following:

- ATI Radeon™ HD 4000, HD 5700 and HD 5800 series graphics
- ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4000 series graphics (and higher)
- ATI Radeon™ HD 3000 integrated graphics (and higher)
- ATI FirePro™ V3750, V5700, V7750, V8700 and V8750 graphics accelerators (and later)

I, like a bunch of other TG folks are still running an 8800, waiting for Nvidia to put out their next gen, so I won't get any boost.:mad::mad:
I was considering either getting 2x500GB or 2x1TB drives and RAID/SATA them together so that if one fails, I have the data on the second.

Does anyone have experience with this and possibly offer a suggestion as to which to purchase? I'd like to stay under 100 per drive, but wouldn't mind cheaper (like 60 per 500GB drive option if I decide I don't need a ton of space).

I'm looking forward to buying a keyboard and mouse. I was wondering what the best kind was. I'm kinda picky about the mouse. I don't like oversized mouses, in fact I've used a lot of netbook mouses and loved them. I kinda didn't like wired mouses because the cord would always get in the way, pull my aim slightly, sometimes even getting snagged, it's a mess. But batteries are annoying as hell. I also don't like those crazy shaped ones. A simple groove for my right hand thumb is fine but if otherwise a lefty couldn't use it it's probably a good indication I won't like it.

As for the keybord, not too picky, right now I have a Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard 1.0a and it's been fine other than the fact that I have to keep pressing the F lock button on startup and the keys have gotten sticky from me drinking and eating around it. Maybe a couple more function keys would be nice?

Anyways any recomendations? I was looking at Logitech's stuff, hopefully nothing too pricey (if anyone says Razor I'm gonna kick them in the shins :row__523: )

Just remember when you get to the actual monitors, the reviews aren't on the page. You have to click the name of the monitor you want to see a review for to see the info.

Also remember a lot of these "Full HD" monitors have a 1080p resolution, so 1920x1080. They are priced pretty cheap, but you might want to look at the slightly more costly screens that run a 1920 x 1200 resolution.

This just got posted on Maximum PC, and is a review of Logitech's new G500.
It looks like it is a good update to the MX510 and MX518 many of us have and love. I have to agree that there is a bit of overkill on the thumb buttons.

I have an old pc that I gave to my dad after I started university. Today he called to tell me that for the last few days, one of the 2 pc's HDs has been making making crunching noises and reading information much slower than before. He also mentioned that sometimes, Firefox and applications upon opening would abruptly freeze and would require ctrl-alt-del to close.

The hard drive that seems to be the problem is a 500GB Seagate that has been purchased in 2007. My initial diagnosis is that the HD itself is dying and would soon need to be replaced.

However it is also the hard drive that has the operating system (WinXP Pro SP3) installed. So before I tell my dad to purchase a new HD, am I right in thinking that it is a failing HD that needs to be replaced?

Thank you in advance.
