Re: Far Cry 2 on PC ... Awesome or not ? your thoughts plz
Ya Magnum I did that Mission with out firing a shot, but in the end I did not get any goods.I keep having these great missions, but the long drive/walk in between is really driving me crazy, I have little time to game so getting from point A to point B takes up too much time...
It's a love/hate relationship with this game...
I was told to get to the airport and take out a target of oppurtunity...
After going across map, with checkpoint engagement after engagement, I finally got to the airport, stopped in the distance, crawled up (really crouch, no prone, another problem I have) recon'ed the airfield, took out a sniper in a tower with my sniper rifle, then moved to a better location, took out a couple of more guards by blowing up the propane tank next to them, then had a enemy vehicle come hailing in, (tried to run me over, another thing I hate, but I guess is realistic), took care of them, then snipped the target inside the building, then burned everything, waited till the fire died down, went in and got the goods.... very cool mission.
Pear I have become a fan of the bus, but dont bring you right to your objective and the check points respawns when your 60 ft out, and most the time I have to go through it twice, once go out and once coming back. For Travel remember.. Take the BUS! In the age of Green everything.. Public Transport is the way to go!.
One Crazy Mission I grabbed the bus to the location (from the arms dealer..) and the Convoy was just driving past the Station.... I planted an IED outside and waitied for it to return and BAM! .. then I just ran out and grabbed the bus back... Very Fast..

I like the checkpoints in the game, it gives you a reason to get out of your car and do something other then drive around. It breaks the mundane driving with some small contained action areas.

The bus doesn't always take you where you need to go. There are only 5 bus stops on the map. Sometimes you get a mission close to the station and sometimes you spend just as much time travelling to a bus station and from the bus station to the objective. Plus, taking the bus doesn't make it seamless anymore because there's a load screen.

Re: Far Cry 2 on PC ... Awesome or not ? your thoughts plz
The gfx are nice, no arguement there. I really don't think to much of the sp gameplay, that style of play bores me in about 20 minutes. It's well done, I just don't like it. The AI is summed up best in a single word... Horrible.
The multiplayer is ok, no prone position=the suck. I actually don't mind the lack of VOIP, that way I dont get to hear every tard who got the game babble on about worthless BS. I'm on vent with my friends and we enjoy the mp aspect of the game, especially the last mode who's name for some reason escapes me at the moment. Escorting the cpt to control points to capture them is a nice mode of gameplay and rewards/punishes proper/improper teamwork quite well. The game is quite tactical imo, but only under the proper setting of 2 teams using a voice program to work together. Let's face facts, teamwork is something that rarely ever happens in pub servers for any game without an admin forcing it to happen. I don't think this is any more or less tactical then any other shooter out there right now, it comes down to the people on the team, not the game to make it that.

Re: Far Cry 2 on PC ... Awesome or not ? your thoughts plz
So far what I've seen. (I'm about at the 50% mark when looking at the load progress)
I've been running at max settings, 2x AA, 1680x1050, Normal Difficulty.
Good:
Graphics- Very nice looking and although Crysis has better graphics, this game doesn't bring me down to 10 fps to do it.
Fire- Fire is nice and spreads well in grass but it is disappointing when things like dry wooden fences don't burn.
Large World- This is both good and bad. I like that there are many new things to see even after quite a few hours of gameplay.
Vehicles- vehicles are kind of twitchy when being driven but they are okay overall. Once you get to Stage 2 the vehicles get even better when you receive jeeps/boats with MK-19s.
Stealth - It really is enjoyable to be able to sneak up through a town and shoot a guard in the back of the head with a silenced pistol. That is all.
Explosions- I really do enjoy the explosions in this game. Several times I have been chased down in my jeep by a gang of hooligans after being rammed head-on by another gang of hooligans. As the three cars collide it is so satisfactory to jump out, toss a grenade under your vehicle, and run like hell as you watch the 3 cars explode and light up the night sky.
Bad:
Checkpoints - They're everywhere! I can't stand them. At the beginning I would stop and fight but now I just drive through them and only stop if they have an agressive driver chasing me who won't give up.
Large World- The 50 square kilometer spiel is B.S. The majority of the map are large cliffs that can not be climbed. I love being a sniper in games like these and not having the ability to reach the high ground kind of ruined the open world idea for me. Driving time to and from missions is a pain in the butt as well but I suppose it wouldn't be so bad without half the checkpoints.
Weapons- The large selection of weapons is great but when they fall apart after shooting three clips it gets a bit annoying.
Other Thoughts
When I got to around 20% through the game it felt very slow and repetitive. It was always something along the lines of
-"Hey, I need this dude killed"
-Drive 5 km to site, passing 12 checkpoints along the way.
-Find out that you forgot to reload your good weapon before you left.
-Fight at the mission marker until you've killed everybody in sight
-Once you kill some random guy / blown up some gas tank the HUD says mission complete
-Drive back and get your money / guns / new mission.
Also, the AI started getting really easy at 20%. By that time I've learned most of their tactics and I find it fun to get shot just to see what other cool healing animations I haven't seen yet. I started really hoping for a cut-scene. Something that would put some flavor back into the game. Then it came!
Once you complete the mission to kill the UFLL captain the story gets pretty crazy! I don't want to give it away but if you are getting bored at 30% just stick with it for another 30 mins to 1 hour of gameplay and it will get much more interesting!
Also, if you start getting bored open fire in the cease fire zone sometime and see how many you can kill before you die, it can be very relaxing....
Overall, I do like the game. It was interesting, got boring for a while, then it picked up again. There is a whole new map once you get to stage 2.
Bah, It's late. I know of a lot more critique but I can't think of it right now. I'll post it later or something.

Sounds like an amazing platform for the mod community to jump on.
Some custom maps and some tactical play will make this a valuable game down the road.

The 5 Bus stops on the map are located at the corners and center of the map (as you who play know).. So to AVOID The Driving and Mundane tasks of taking out checkpoints..just take the bus.. plus they usually have a vehicle jsut waiting for you to "Borrow".
If you need to live the experience (aka..Seemless..) then by all means... Drive on ...|TG|ARMA Pathfinder

Re: Far Cry 2 on PC ... Awesome or not ? your thoughts plz
Taking the bus still doesn't avoid the mundane driving. There's often a need to drive to a bus stop and then from a bus stop to the objective. Unless you're in the centre town, there's going to be a drive to the bus stop.
I had one instance of going to take the bus but finding out that the objective is in the exact middle at the side of the map. It still took a few minutes of driving after the bus. Plus, I'm using whatever is at the bus stop and I'd rather have a machine gun jeep to take out any guard posts.
Any other way around this?

Re: Far Cry 2 on PC ... Awesome or not ? your thoughts plz
That sums up the game for me as well. The SP starts out great but then slowly turns repetative in a way most other games seem to avoid.
I have given up on the sneaky tactical approach and now go for lots of RPG rounds and explosions followed up with sniper fire. Then I go kick in the door with the Mac 10. Trying to have a sustained fire fight is a death wish as the AI see you everywhere and rush your position instantly. It is nice that their tough but it is a little much at times.
The multiplayer at this point shouldn't even be included with this game. I can't believe a retail PC game has MP this flawed (this is only talking about the setup and menue, the game play is standard fare).
Overall a decent game but not ground breaking in the gameplay department, beatifull looking with some really nice effects.

Re: Far Cry 2 on PC ... Awesome or not ? your thoughts plz
I just wanted to comment on this paragraph. What you are referring to is what is commonly called "consolitis". Where they make the menu navigation and mp experience quite "dumbed down" from what pc users are used to so they can essentially directly port that aspect of their game across multiple platforms. Don't forget, only valve and activision make games mainly for PC users anymore, everyone else makes games mainly for console users, and ports the game over to PC. Because games are mostly made from the console point of view, they dont spend to much time on mp menuing and so forth, because most console users dont care about that stuff, they just click "start game" and go from there.

Not to get off topic..but how cool is the Heavy Mortar? Pretty Damn Cool.. I wish they had these things in PR or ArMA.. Oh my.. Sounds wonderfull etc.. I just don't know what I am firing out of the thing..It hits with little to no explosion... I love the incoming whistling sound... Good stuff... I take that and just go shell towns just for the hell of it (of course I saved prior!).. Neat..
