This would convince me to try some new maps on our server. I haven't played anything but stock maps on BF, so I'm not sure how things work. Can anyone enlighten me? Will BF download the map from the game server like in CS? Or does it just boot you if you don't have the map?

Right now BF will boot you off. The most you can do is put an announcement in-game and hope people read it, jump out of the current game, go download the map, install it and jump back on the server.

Re: Custom DC Maps

yeah thats right now asch but raven shield used to do that, do you know whether the option of a file sharing download system works with battlefield to make this possible....

In that case, I don't think custom maps are a good for our main server. Double the number of active, paying members and we could probably pull it off, but right now we still need some pubbies on the server and custom maps will certainly not help in that regard.

Perhaps a Special Events custom map night once a month, though? It would certainly be fun to play on maps that are completely new!

I was to understand that the paying members had a little bit of say about some of this. If I'm wrong, please correct me. Can we put this to a vote from the members? I personally would like the custom maps and I believe pubbies would still come in and play. Maybe even more if we are one of the few servers actually doing something different. Adding custom maps will do one thing. It will dissaude those players who just want a quick fix and don't really care about the server anyway. Those who like our style of play will deal to be a part of it. It's not like they would have to download a map everytime. A one-time download and everyone is on the same page.

The members who come in and play DC night after night are starting to get tired of the default maps. I know. I'm one of them.

I'm not sure that us having custom maps would make us a server "that is doing something different." There are other servers out there that run custom maps, some even dedicated to it. I used to try and download all the new maps that came out but there were so many that it became tiresome. I stopped looking for servers with custom maps because I would never know which custom maps they would have and didn't want to spend the time trying to find them and download them.

For those pubbies that like our style of play, I believe they would make an effort to find and download the custom maps. However I don't believe that we have enough of those folks and with custom maps always there, it may discourage some from even jumping on to our server.

I too am somewhat tired of the stock maps. Most of us know how to play them, where to hide, choke points, etc. I'm not sure though that custom maps would bring back some of the missing TGers. Are they tired of the maps or are they lacking some of the team-work that has grown with the other games? I'd personally like to see some more organization of teams, breaking out into separate TS channels, having someone command the teams and see what can happen.

I do like Cing's idea of possibly creating one night a week that is dedicated to custom maps. If we do add custom maps I'd like to see maps created by members of the TG community (we support our folks ) and then allow people to submit other custom maps for review. The reason I say review is that we should be somewhat selective in the maps we host. Make sure they are quality maps.

Re: Custom DC Maps

The problem I see is that our recruiting has been horrible. I don't think we have enough members in our BF community. If you think this is the most effective way to recruit paying members, then maybe we should try this for a while. I think it would be better to try a week or two of somewhat aggressive recruiting, gain a dozen more members, and then try the custom maps out... Just my opinion.

Absolutely. This is an excellent discussion and one that needs to happen. BUT, in the end, this is a decision that will have a direct impact on TG resources and membership levels, so it will ultimately be up to the admins to decide what happens with the server. Member input will absolutely be considered and I think will be held as the most important opinion.

Yeah, I was just going to suggest that Mad Dog submit some of the custom maps he was thinking of... Personally, I don't even know if there are any decent custom maps out there. I've just never looked. I'm interested, though.

Thank you for the reply and clarification. You are of course right. Most business's don't let the members vote on what they get, but do listen to input and I'm glad to see this is no different.
