I love steam. I've bought a number of games and preloaded all of them off of steam without a hitch.
Although you pretty much gotta have broadband if you want to download it in a reasonable amount of time.
It's a lot BIGGER of a hassle to drive down a day or two after release to the software store in the heat, make sure they have a copy, then drive back, all while spending gas money. This way I can play it once it unlocks right after its released and I'm guaranteed a copy.
Whether you buy in the store or buy off steam is really a matter of personal preference. Do you want the box\manual art stuff? Then the store is the way to go. Other than that I think steam has been a great idea.
