Playing through this game again and I still love it...

Damn my PC though, I bet it looks so much better when you don't have to play it with static lighting as opposed to, say full dynamic lighting

It definitely does. I have been replaying it with my new(er) graphics card and it makes a difference, especially in the sewers. The best part of the game though is how the AI interacts with one another.

I downloaded this fun little mod that changes the AI a bit... it's a little more forgiving for the sneaky type without being too much of a cheat. It also tweaks the enemy accuracy a bit... again, not so much that it's really cheating, just makes things a little less frustrating.

I've downloaded a few other mods too, but couldn't link to them as I've completely forgot the names :P
a mod that gives you access to characters that will repair equipment for a fee
a mod that lets you adjust the flashlight distance and brightness
a mod that changes the trading in the game (NOT the trader mod... this one is a little more balanced out, keeping the gameplay fair and interesting throughout)

This is pretty late, but I'm playing the game for the first time thru steam, any mods I should get?

    Personally, I'd say play through it first without any mods and get a feeling for it... but I would recommend these two, at the very least;
The Quest mod (gives you more than a single in-game day to complete tasks.... most of which seem nearly impossible to complete in a single day, so I call it a balance fix)
    and
The Repair Mod (which is nice to have, since rare items are pretty nice to... you know... USE, haha)

If you're unhappy with how well the AI is able to pin you down and headshot you without much difficulty... try the mod I mentioned above.. I don't find it to be unbalancing with the gameplay at all (Hell, I still die a lot!)

Reloaded it about a week ago as well. I had alot of fun.

I remember how totally frustrated I got with the weapons the first time I played. Right at the start, you can get killed by a wandering mesquito. I learned not to conserve ammo in a close firefight and not to expect anyone to die from a couple shots at close range, and that you're guns at the beginning are absolutely useless at any distance over 10 feet. At the beginning you need to be able to sneak up close to someone and totally unload your weapon on them to expect a kill.

But if you grab that Merc suit out of the attic in the first town, your good to go in the early gun fights. You have inaccurate weapons and so does your opponent to start. The suit allows you to stand up to them.

Ya, if you grab the secret suit. Great.

I can do it now without too much trouble, without the suit. It's not that much of a problem, you just need to know the limitations of the weapons and how to approach the early battles. Alot of hiding and popping out for quick unloads of your weapon. It's just a different style of play. Later when you get the scoped weapons and damage/accuracy gets better, you can play the way I would traditionally expect to play FPS.

Good news on the mod front - there's a new storyline mod that puts you into a role of a military officer instead of a Stalker here, I think.

Not only that, but I've heard many impossible things implemented by some Russian modders, with their latest version coming out in 10 days.

Damn...I may need to retry this game with the quest mod. The basic game was well done, I just didn't like the pressure to need to be some place at a certain time.

The box in the attic was empty when I searched it

It's not empty, you have to poke around until you see where the suit landed.
