Loadout = guns
Role = gadgets
any loadout can be combined with any role

Roles separate from loadout:
After sifting through a myriad of videos and explanations of this game, this feature is the one that stood out the most for me (aside from the whole "Frontlines" feature, which I absolutely LOVE).
Having the classes separate from the loadout is a subtle but extremely important shift in gameplay. IMO, it makes it closer to a more tactical shooter rather than an action shooter. After all, I should be able to carry any damned gun I please right? And in this day and age (and in the future) it's the gadgetry that determines the role, not the gun you carry.

The thing is the role's gadgets get unlocked during the round, so you are kind of stuck with the role you choose and free to swap your main weapons kit (unless you only prefer the first tier gadget or are good enough to fully unlock more then one role tree).
