So, is the game really that good? I looked at it because a few friends said it was pretty good but I was turned off by the cell shading. Yeah its a dumb thing to turn me off on a game, but I still have nightmares about what they did to zelda

I say it's well worth it, but something like cell shading probably wouldn't ruin a game for me. The game is much more fun if friends are playing. It can be frustrating if you aren't playing at the same time with the same people because if you get 3-4 (sometimes even just 2) levels off from whomever is hosting a game, there is absolutely no balance. It's usually easy to make up the difference in levels with a couple of hours of playtime with the higher level player, but you will be completely ineffective against enemies. The story line and objectives really make the game for me, listening to some of the recordings that are scattered on the levels make me laugh every time I hear them.

I've completely the main game and all three DLCs on both playthroughs (second playthrough on each game is the same except the enemies are more difficult) for the soldier character (Roland). I've got two characters who are Level 26-29 and one at Level 9. I have never had a game that I've played more than once, except this one and I've essentially played through it twice and have three games that I'm playing through the first playthrough again. I wouldn't hesitate to start another character if someone just bought the game and wanted someone to play the game with.

Let me know if you have some specific aspects of the game that you'd like to see and I'll FRAPs some footage for you and post it up. I know there are videos on YouTube, but if you want to see something specific, I'll be happy to get some video of it.

Thanks for the info cat. What is the RPG element like? Is it still a basic grind to level up? Or is it more fun and interactive? Thats one thing I am worried about. I have played several RPG's and I hate having to spend the first few weeks killing rats to level up enough to start having some fun.

Alright, I completely deleted my original post....I'm going to try and be objective

I don't see a grind portion to Borderlands, in the typical sense. If you're going about the game and completing missions from the bounty board and the regular story line, there was only one or two times where I felt that I could benefit from going out and doing the typical grinding. A lot of the levels auto adjust the levels of the enemies to a level close to yours and the mission quests will let you know if a mission is beyond your current abilities. That being said, I can see how a few of the missions could be seen as the same thing you just did, just slightly tweaked, having to fight through a cave to obtain a key from an enemy, but I have to really think about the missions to come up with that. There are three missions in the zombie island DLC pack that I HATE and they are the same. It's collecting [AN ITEM], you only get this item from killing enemies with headshots, first mission is 25 [ITEMS], then 50, then 100...those aren't the exact numbers, but you get my point. These missions aren't vital to the main story line and not getting the XP from the missions won't hamper your level progression. I had to complete it just because of the tie in to a character from the main storyline (I am trying really hard not to give away any spoilers--sorry for the confusing side talk).

I usually played the game in 1-3 hour blocks and I don't recall playing an entire night at not leveling up at least once or twice (well up to about level 45 or so)

Since a few people have picked the game up recently, I started a character Tuesday night, I think I started around 10pm and played until 2am, that character was at Level 9 when I stopped. Also the main benefit to leveling is the skill points you get to use on your ability and you can reallocate these points as long as you have money to spend and I never had a point in the game where I felt like I was struggling to obtain money, but I wasn't swimming in money either (until the end).

Thanks again for all the info man. This is starting to sound like a fun game more and more. I just might have to give it a try. Last question. Multiplayer. Yes, No? Good, Bad?

Thats the last one I swear.

Technically I believe the answer is no. There is really only the 4 player co-op, however, there are a few arenas around the planet that allow you to do 4 man free for all death match games, there are several options, but I've only played these a few times, the SP storyline and game is much more entertaining.

The co-op integrates very well with the single player. Whomever is hosting controls what missions you go on, if you've completed the mission you don't get the points again for turning it in, but you do get experience points from killing enemies. Whenever money is picked up, everyone gets money, ammo is typically abundant enough so that you won't run out, you get XP when other people get kills as if you made the kill, weapons/shields/mods are the only issue with co-op (if you're playing with people you don't know).

and ask as many questions as you like, I don't mind answering them....BTW I got a beta key from Best Buy for MOH, I'll get that installed in the next couple of days

Glad to hear! I may take a serious look into this game. It sounds like more fun than a barrel of monkeys. ( throw back #1 for the day )

    Re: Anyone checked out Borderlands?

I don't know if they fixed it not, but when I was playing multiplayer was very hard to get working due to the ports the game used. They might have addressed it in a patch since then though. Anyone have the expansion packs? I never got any of them but was curious.

I wonder if I still have my save files anywhere....

    Re: Anyone checked out Borderlands?

Spyder, I remember reading that the port forwarding issue was resolved. I had my router set up to correctly forward the ports and it worked perfectly. I know I hopped on with SirNerd two nights ago and I don't think he had hosted before and probably didn't have his ports set up. I can turn off forwarding tonight and see if there is any issue getting a game started.

I bought all three DLC packs, the only one I didn't like was the Moxie's Playground. It's the Mad Max style arena death match, it just seems to take forever, I'm not typing out my full opinion, if you want it, I'll be glad, but it's fairly long and I've got a headache right now. For me, once I was finally able to complete it, the additional skill point was worth it, plus it a gave me a place to store my extra 'orange' weapons.

As for save files, I can send you mine

    Re: Anyone checked out Borderlands?

Alright I was digging through my old posts in the 8th forum and found some footage I shot in game. Warning: most of the audio is me laughing like a fool

This is what kept me playing the game for so long, the search for rare 'orange' level weapons.

Also, I'm not going to post them all here, but here are some of the weapons I've picked up. if you open the image in a new tab, just change the web address ending from 1.png to 2.png, 3.png, 4.png, etc. up to 43.png. Also it's easy to share/duplicate weapons in this game. Please no opinions on if this constitutes cheating, if you don't want to participate, don't.

I picked this up during the 4th sale and have been enjoying it especially in co-op. Not a terrible amount of tactics required, most things can be easily overcome with a direct frontal assault. But the rpg elements have good humor and the fps elements are solid.

Solid game when I played it at my mom's (yes, she plays video games). Its fun and simple and probably a blast when playing in Co-Op.

In anycase, its a fun actiony sort of game where FPS and RPG meet. I'd personally want more in a game but its up their with L4D series and Killing Floor (aka get it cheap and it'll be more than worth it).

    Re: Anyone checked out Borderlands?

The game had a bad hacking problem. It was kinda ruined for me after some guy gave me a godly, hacked sniper machine rifle that did more damage than your average rocket launcher. Plus, if I remember correctly, it used Gamespy for it's multiplayer. Seriously, gamespy?

It's also got some bad consolitis that can be distracting.

But the graphics are fun, the action is fast and there isn't much grinding since you tend to level up just going through the quests. It's definitely worth picking up if you find it cheap.

    Re: Anyone checked out Borderlands?

The modded custom weapons are commonplace. It's thought of as just that: custom weapons. They aren't viewed as a "hack" per se (not in the way of cheating). I've edited a few weaps myself, but that's about as far as modding goes in Borderlands.

I agree Gamespy is a poor choice for multiplayer here and unfortunately, it breaks multiplayer for the majority of PC players who want to play a game with a friend online. However, it plays fine over LAN and there we don't have to deal with Gamespy.

What a great game this is. You can keep on playing it and it never is the same. I was really really lucky and got a shield somewhere that has pretty much unlimited health. I only die if I fall off a cliff. Sure that sort of ruins part of the fun. But I had already played the game through so it's not like I couldn't have done it without it But it made some of the boring DLC things much easier.
