Interesting. BF2 hit in July 05.. It looks like there's another inflection point around Jan '07... what's that?

Re: We broke 20,000 members!

Well at 20,000+ members, TG is probably one of the top 500 or so forums with more than 10,000 members.

The way I look at inactive accounts is this: a lot people will just read a forum and they'll register an account for the event (some time in the future) where they think they'll need it in order to read a certain section or to post.

Congrats to all of our gamers!

Re: We broke 20,000 members!

It'd be really interesting to see a similar plot for supporting memberships.

i could do it, but the first and biggest problem is that, if i were to spend that huge amount of time in the members list, it would only show me who is an SM "Right Now", and not who WAS one in 5/03,
and also: i think the list/amount of SMs is not public from earlier posts asking how many SMs there were(few months ago if i recall), and to count boldies page by page would be a pain, because i am counting individualy, and also, some people start/stop SMship which would make it horrible to keep track of, i would have to make an individual line graph for everyone that was ever an SM, it would be easier for Apo and/or someone at the highest of high levels to tally paypal transactions, but then again, i dont think that is public

Ya, look who is talking.....

Axis, just wait another year and 70+ won't be looking too bad.

And just imagine the money Apophis would have if we all became supporting members. WOW!!!

As some one said about quality over quantity and there abouts- look at gamefaqs and gamespot and their garbage 45,000 member community.

Re: We broke 20,000 members!

I would expect the SM membership is considered proprietary, but it isn't that hard to write a web agent that could process the membership pages for bold and do that calc automatically. Suffice it to say, my guess is that TG is doing well enough with SMs to support our existing servers, but we need to continue to grow paying membership to make investments in support of new games. For example, TG has to provision and pay for servers for a game like COD4 long before any additional revenue is added by those playing that game. Meanwhile, for those arguing that there is existing revenue from COD2 players, it is unlikely that TG turns off its servers for other/older games just as fast as a new game is released (thus the need for new player growth).

It's not proprietary, there have been several discussions in the SM-General forum about this very topic. I just don't crunch the numbers that often.

You are right in your assessment though. Additionally- A lot of people don't consider the cost of the infrastructure servers (web, database, DNS, mail, backup, security, etc) in addition to the game servers.
