Re: Any warhammer 40k miniature enthusiasts?

That's what I thought when I started, heh.

Washing is watering down your paint, and applying lots of layers, you won't see much at first, but the end job will be very smooth and even. (correct me if I'm wrong, I havn't done this in a while)

I'll try and get some pictures up of my few remaining minis, I only kept the ones that I did the best. I've always wanted to show them off.

Re: Any warhammer 40k miniature enthusiasts?

Heres the steps I have configured to do: The painting area gets hazy:

1.Buy select Citadel paints to finish a simply squad of Space Marines? (Should I choose another race, or am I correct in saying it is the easiest?)
1a.Purchase all necessary supplies (Brushes etc.)
2.Arrange a chest high table and/or chair with clamps.
3.Begin an assembly line, leaving off anything besides Legs/Arms/Chest/Head, and start by attaching legs to the base. Using super glue.
4. Use a Spray primer (Black) to coat all of the Space Marines
5. Stop assembly line technique and work on one SM (to see how it comes out.)
6. After Primer (dried) apply a watered down paint to appropriate areas starting with paints that cover a higher percentage of the mini.

Question: Start from bottom to top or vice versa?

7. Paint (in this case) Backpack/Gun etc separately and then attach.
8. Judge and apply to others.
9. Work on details

Question: "Highlighting" example:
The light to dark, outside to inside on joint areas is done by applying white paint underneath the coat of green or which ever color? This is a technique I would very much like to do, the definition of the body realy sticks out.

That is a very brief, off the top of my head break down as to what I will be needing to do.

Question for gameplay: Does the color scheme matter? Although done in the future, for now Ill be following the guide lines of prearrange colors with few adjustments.

Color schemes don't really matter unless you're playing with people who are sticklers for the setting/rules. For instance, if you wished to use specific Space Marine chapter rules, you should paint your marines that chapter's colors. Blue, Yellow, and White for Ultramarines, Yellow and Black for Imperial Fists, Black, White and Red for Black Templar, etc...
I'd feel free to pain them however you wish, though. I like some variety in my armies. My Ulthwé were mostly black, so I got very creative with my Aspect Warriors.

Re: Any warhammer 40k miniature enthusiasts?

I had a friend who played WH40k (Dark Eldar). Always seemed like it would be really fun to get into if it wasn't so expensive. I always liked the painting aspect of it and it has a neat fluffy backstory.

Also: Gogo Pink and White Hello Kitty marine chapter.

Hello Kitty Army seems a little harsh on the eyes, so I'll pass :P

Re: Any warhammer 40k miniature enthusiasts?

Over the past 2 months or so I was rethinking of getting into the miniature scene (until I finally found another DnD group, and that sucks up 5 hours of my weekend now) The cost was a big factor for me, too, as well as the painting, because I have fine motor coordination problems (my hands shake when doing detail work (St. Vitus' Dance or essential tremor, haven't gotten it professionally checked yet).

I used to play Battletech for a bit, back in the FASA era (not seen any of the WhizKids stuff) and the units were never really expensive or collectable, figure 5-10 dollars, maybe 20 dollars at the most for an assault mech

The army I was interested was the Tau Empire, mostly because of the flashy looks and philosophy, and the focus on large, valuable units instead of hundreds of smaller throw-aways like the Orks. The problem is, starting with a decent point value would cost me 200-300 dollars, not including paints and whatnot (I figure 90 dollars for the Battleforce set, 25 dollars for the battlesuit commander, 40 more for 2 XV8 battlesuits to escort the commander, and a squad of Pathfinders and maybe Stingwing, plus the codex and rulebook.) Thats quite a lot of investment for a game I haven't tried and know i'l like, plus finding people to play with!

Re: Any warhammer 40k miniature enthusiasts?

I play rarely but I do paint from time to time. I painted a full army of space marines (about 6,000 base points) I never win contests, But I do get a fair share of compliments. I also painted Tyranids, Orks, Tau, and one lovely baneblade. Once I get my camera working, I'll post up a picture later.

The one thing I wish I was honestly better at, is terrain building. That's my suck.
