Re: EA new business model = Battlefield Heroes (& its free!)
The pay for perks system is very popular in Korean MMORPGs, are you saying that millions of Koreans are financial idiots?
Its simple. Games have three models of paying.
If given these three options upfront I think most people would pick option 3. |

Basically: Getting shot by a tiger tank when you could also access and use a tiger tank = Fun. Getting shot by a tiger tank when you could also acce ss a tiger tank, but then you wouldn't be able to pay rent? = Suck. Maybe if the system is set up in a fashion similar to Dawn of War and it's expansion packs, where the new content is fairly balanced and the advantage is that you are getting new, not more powerful, content, I could see it working. But the few anecdotes I've seen coming out of Asian games is less 'pay for options' and more 'pay, or you'll have no chance at competing with players that choose to or can afford to play.' Though, as a final word, if EA makes a total mess of things there will always be mods, user generated games, and Starsiege Tribes to fall back on. You know, looking at the teaser videos, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the pay content was character customization options, which I don't have any particular problem with. Wasn't there a parody a while back about a game where you had to swipe your credit card to fire your gun? PPS - Sometimes, I think about joining a game of ARMA or PR, but I just don't have two or three hours to put into a game. And I think, 'Gee, all I really want to do is tear around hell for leather in a tank, snipe some noobs, and maybe drop an airplane on someone.' This seems like a nice stopgap game for the times when you just don't have time for a grand campaign, but you still want to shoot something in the face. |
