Re: CLOVERFIELD, did anyone go see it..? should I?
I heard the producer get interviewed and he there were a couple tie-ins to Lost. The funny thing is that the guy who played Hud asked him.
I also saw a tip-o-the-hat to half life. |

Re: CLOVERFIELD, did anyone go see it..? should I?
I love the movie. Problem is I don't like the characters at all.
Still it deserves to be seen and compares favorably to the competition. It's actually funny but I think it compares more to Steven Spelberg's War of the Worlds then the US/Japanese Godzilla films. In that comparison it fairs very well. While I didn't mind the characters in WOTW it's last hour was no where near as good as the first. Cloverfield remans intense throughout the whole two hours except for the first 10-15 min. I also like that Cloverfield is well ruthless and alot of main characters die. Don't expect any of that soft "Ray arriving in Boston and everything is alright" ending. I want a sequel but I would like a sequel to take the standard approach of monster movies. Like this a major complaint about the movie would be solved since we would be looking at the attack from a government/military/scientist POV.

Yh it rocked, pretty solid and fun film. See it on the biggest screen possible, that's where it deserves to be, don't wait for it come out on DVD, if you want to see it, go catch it at your local cinema ASAP.

I did not like the movie. In fact, I walked out halfway. The cinematography was witchblair project style. I could not handle the camera shake.

Re: CLOVERFIELD, did anyone go see it..? should I?
Yh, apparently quite a few people have got motion sickness from the shakiness, and I think the big screen actually makes that worse because there is so much of it. Where there's a shaky home video, you're OK because the TV isn't huge and right in your face. However if you can withstand the motion sickness, the hecticness (not a word but you get it) makes it one hell of a ride. Bleeding, try renting it on DVD when it comes out and watching it on a smaller screen, because it is pretty awesome.

Re: CLOVERFIELD, did anyone go see it..? should I?
Quick review without spoilers...
Good film, beginning may be a little boring, but it sets the tone and it makes you understand the characters and their relationships, and it builds those quite well. It creates a good atmosphere and if you get absorbed in it like I did you'll get pretty tense throughout the ordeal. it's a fun action film, that's pretty short and full of action moments, and a lot of them are done well. Don't expect it to be very realistic, a few moments happen that are just laughable in terms of how impossible that would be...but you've seen all those Arnie and Stallone action epics, they weren't all "Black-Hawk Down" realistic, but they work because they're good, fun films, and this is too. There are quite a few twists and some very nice visuals. If you're someone who gets motion sickness, I suggest either downloading it or waiting for the DVD version, but otherwise, I think most people would enjoy this film. Not everything is clear, don't expect everything to be explained, that's the way it is, a home video made by some people, and that's it. Don't expect Mr. Scientist guy half-way through to come in and say "well folks, this is what's going on!" It's not that type of film, it's a merciless and fun ride that leaves you with questions, and I highly recommend it. THERE WILL BE A SEQUEL BTW.

Re: CLOVERFIELD, did anyone go see it..? should I?
Resurrection.
I got this through Netflix with some trepidation. The reviews seem to be mixed. I really liked it. But I like ambiguous movies where you can use your imagination to create your own interpretation of events. Seemed like every couple of minutes I was thinking "wonder what is happening over there" and "what the hell would I do?" The effects are very good. The monster is believable. It recalls some of the best moments I have had in games like HalfLife. What more could you ask?

Re: CLOVERFIELD, did anyone go see it..? should I?
I'd like to see a sequel myself, but from the perspective of an individual soldier, or a police officer. Someone who can listen in on things, maybe knew about it a few hours or minutes before the folks in the movie, but who is still stuck in a continual state of bewilderment and confusion.
The premise to the movie is a giant monster movie, Godzilla style, but from an American Perspective. Instead of being spawned by, say, nuclear radiation, the monster has a lot more in common with a terrorist attack. It comes from no where, causes incredible damage, and to the people affected there is no way of understanding or making sense of the event. Another thing the keep in mind is that the film is framed as a piece of evidence recovered from a poorly understood attack on new york, being viewed by someone in the DOD trying to understand what happened. And the 'story' in the movie is about developing the characters themselves and their reaction to the things happening around them, rather than 'how do we blow up the big scary monster'. So, I liked it, because it's very new and different take on how you make a monster movie. And I'd like to see a sequel, concerning the same events but from a different perspective. |

Re: CLOVERFIELD, did anyone go see it..? should I?
Yh great film, still think it was awesome, but I'm not sure how the sequel will be. I think that more of the same shaky cam would be a little repetitive, and a bit of a cop out in terms of story - who else would have a camera with them the whole time? - whereas leaving that style would take away from what the original feeling of the film was. I probably wouldn't want to see it if they went in a new cinematic direction, as they'd explain everything, and ruin the original experience.
Plus, Cloverfield 2 just sounds silly. Cloverfield as a stand-alone title is awesome - but obviously, the sequel is being made for commercial reasons and they want to cash-in on the decent success of the original movie.

Kind of like "Night of the Living Dead". Nominally a zombie movie, it focused on the plight of those trapped together fighting them.
