i keep getting hung up on the adserv.tacticalgamer.com deal. I had this issue before, but it will go away and come back daily.

Nothing makes your computer special. This is a cumulative issue that only occurs when certain events happen that combine the inefficiency of the SQL code with traffic load on the site. When the right combination is in effect, the server load increases to a point where the site tells you its too busy to process new requests. At that point some users are having there requests processed and others are not. I'm sure a large number of people have never gotten those errors. Hell, I've never gotten the error. But I can see based on the process load that people WOULD have been getting them.

please don't take my questions as anything but curiosity Apo.

Is TG at the place, as Silver suggested, that the webserver is becoming underpowered? Can I ask what it's current specs are? (last time I knew it was so ridiculously state-of-the-art, I wanted to curl up with it and read it bedtime stories... but has it been upgraded since? and is it in need of it? If not, when would you need to look into it? I ask b/c I would be willing to don.... That reminds me - I am sending you a PM.)

The current web server is a 2x dual core Xeon running at 2.8GHz. 4GB of RAM.

It's not necessarily underpowered, but bad code combined with volume can bring just about ANY server to its knees. The issue is just poor SQL optimization and not really overall server performance.

I will probably bring back the ribbons system but integrate it into the postbit that will display a single ribbon that links to the users full ribbon showcase until I can go through the SQL and see what optimizations can be made to make it a bit more efficient.

The real problem is: people have too many ribbons! Which means there are simply too many great teamplayers in this place...

On a serious note. Given that I don't know if it's already done - maybe caching the ribbons would help. By running the ribbon queries once a day and updating the signatures of all users the server would not have to run multiple ribbon queries every time somebody reads a forum page.

wouldn't that take up a huge amount of space on the server?

I haven't had any more problems. I really enjoyed the new ribbon system also, made it much easier to display them with definitions.

I experienced all the problems the above people did. They disappeared for me when the ribbon system was shut-down.

I always thought that the ribbon system before WAS caching the user information and appending to the sig information (with one weekly update). Does this mean that the system was building everyones sig. from scratch every time a page was loaded?

I just experienced the server is too busy right now message when switching forums. It occurred at ~ 8:40pm CST. Only happened once but I thought someone might want to know.....
After posting this I just received a particial web page load (text with limited or no images, plain white background), refreshing fixed it.
