I would highly recommend Stalker as well. It is an excellent game, and pretty lengthy. Think Oblivion with guns and no leveling up or anything. And if you haven't played Oblivion, you definitely need to get that too.
Medieval II Total War has amazing single player as well. It can keep you occupied for long periods of time. But that's only if you enjoy strategy games. If you do, this is one of the best.

you can also do this multi player iirc. I think I went through it with my wife at one point in time. the original baldurs gate game is the standard by which I judge all other SP role playing games. Nothing since has come even close. I lost nearly 3 months of my life to that game and it was time well spent.

If you want to play an RPG game then I would definitely recommend "Oblivion". I am playing it on both the PC and PS3. For the PC I have all the expansions and add-on's for it. What I love about this old game is you can play it over and over again and it seems like new things pop up all the time and playing as a different race also makes for a slightly different gameplay.
Not to many newer games I have played or many that just aren't that great with the singleplayer side of the game.

Overlord

This is possibly one of the best games of 2007 that flew under everybody's radar. It's an interesting and humourous third-person RPG. You're the bad guy and you seek power by controlling a ton of minions.

Try Homeworld or it's sequel if your interested in unique RTSs.

Black and white is a goody as is it's sequel.
