Re: Damn...sometimes I hate the Air Force!
Psh. I sleep on toolboxes, and during an exercise, in little square single-sandbag-high 'shelters', in MOPP4

I envy and despise the 'Chairforce' people at the same time. See the guy in my avatar? He's not me, but I can guarantee you that he absolutely hates every single aspect of his job, and if every jet on that flightline fell out of the sky and exploded into a billion pieces, it'd be the greatest moment of his life.
Next week, Tuesday, we roll into 12-hour shifts, 5-5. We'll be doing this for two weeks straight, and since I'm not a nonner piece of ****, we're going to be working 12 hours shifts through the weekend (nonners get the weekend off, naturally). All for the sole purpose of 'getting our jets ready for the ORE'.
Naturally, since the ORE Phase I doesn't start until FRIDAY, Ops is going to be surging 26-34 sorties a day, so that our piece of **** Eagles can break every god damn system they have (fun fact - at least ONE major system WILL break into a state of crap any time the jet leaves chocks. This is not a joke. This is what your tax money is being spent on. Fighter aircraft are trash. I am not exaggerating. I'll estimate that in one week, over $1 million goes into a single fighter jet for maintenance alone. These are not combat sorties. These are stateside 'lets play war' sorties. This is especially awesome since half the technology is 30 years old, and still costs $17,400 for a SINGLE multipurpose display - a 6" monochromatic raster TV with 20 buttons on it. Note that the buttons do NOT process anything internally in the MPD - they send the signals to a whole separate computer), so that we're completely ****ed by the time we go to Phase II.
I'm not bitter about my job or anything.

Re: Damn...sometimes I hate the Air Force!
I'm told that the military is now under orders to buy COTS to avoid the high price tags of custom equipment of yesteryear's designs. (Much of which arises due to documentation requirements.) A friend who works for a military supplier tells me that they just re-label their expensive custom stuff as COTS to get it past the requirement. It's still highly custom and because of that expensive.
You know how to make military stuff cheap? Let civilians buy it. Let volume drive the price down.
There's also the issue used by contractor salesmen that we don't want cheap stuff protecting our soldiers. Doesn't matter whether it's true or not. What matters is whether someone approves a cheap replacement and then a disaster happens. In the private sector, this is the "nobody got fired for buying IBM" situation.Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?

Man Dennis have you got some BALLS! Yellin at the Group commander? Wowza. Now THAT is something...sheesh. Even a finger to a Msgt is something... damn dude. Ha...good on ya. Its too bad youre leaving Korea as I'm going to be heading up there later on this year. Doubt I'll be able to make it out to Nellis. We always keep missing each other. If your transportation sends you into Okinawa for a bit, let me know... I'll hook you up with a number to call me at. Maybe we can grab a quick beer.

Re: Damn...sometimes I hate the Air Force!
No kidding! We missed each other in Al Udeid by 3 hours. I am going back to the Desert in August, so I hope to see you there. But no doubt dood, we keep by passing each other! Maybe next time you are in Minnesota, I will swing by and we will grab a beer. My whole Family lives in Duluth and I will make a special trip out. When are you headed back to the states? Where is your follow-on?
Well, I go to get some sleep. I got a long day of writing EPR's and out processing stuff to do early tomorrow.

Re: Damn...sometimes I hate the Air Force!
Yeah mouthing off to higherups can be problem all around sometimes. My brother-in-law is doing his second tour in Iraq and has already done one in Afghanistan too. His biggest problem is that he has a bad attitude towards more senior guys. Has already got him passed over for promotion once because of it so he's kind of toned it down a little.
The biggest thing is that things out in the regular workforce are just as petty and stupid but with less job security (less chance of going to the brig for insubordination too).

The military gives you such delicious stories of being screwed over.
How about being in Afghanistan in the middle of a week-long mission deep in the mountains up north during the cold-ass winter and having the rumors of your tour being extended officially confirmed?
It's, like, "Hey! Great timing!" Nothing boosts morale quite like someone telling you, "Hey... about that trip home next month? Yeah, go ahead and forget about it." ;P--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Blah blah blah.

Re: Damn...sometimes I hate the Air Force!
Years ago in the late 80’s, I was an AGR Sidpers analyst. An E-8’s reenlistment contract had been loaded the day before and had been rejected by the Milpay system for lack of time in service. It took me a day and half to research and correct his PEBD. For my troubles, I was verbally counseled in the cafeteria by my E-7 (in front of a large audience) for wasting time on one soldier. I’ll bet the soldier who had been in since the late 50’s and not paid correctly since the 70’s was surprised with his next paycheck.Originally Posted by Gillespie

yeah, thats the kind of situation where I'd be both happy and pissed off at the same time. Happy because of the larger check. Pissed off because I had been being shafted for 10 years or so.

Re: Damn...sometimes I hate the Air Force!
man, I did both. you can not compare them or complain about college, ever. College is your choice to go, your choice for each day, and effin college girls. No offense. I usually dont like to comment. But the Military is your choice to go, and that is the last choice you really get. And the ones you do get, suck. And somehow you love em too.
Welcome back Dirtboy.
