Re: Damn...sometimes I hate the Air Force!
We got more people in the air force than I realized... How many people ROTC'd compared to just enlist...? and once you get done with college what do typical ROTC'ees go do?
Top is reason I'd rather go for Air Force as well (its actually navy, but you get the point.. couldnt find the actual picture), below is just a picture I found kinda insane. |

Re: Damn...sometimes I hate the Air Force!
Theres a big difference between graduating from ROTC and enlisting. When you enlist, you're enlisted. When you graduate from ROTC, you're an officer.
At time of enlistment/commissioning (meaning you're brand spankin' new): E-1 base pay: $1175/mo. O-1 base pay: $2415/mo. After 20 years (based on advancement in rank of people I know) it looks like this: E-9: $4700/mo O-6: $8000/mo *pay based on the 2006 pay scale chart available here As far as what you go do after college as an ROTC grad, I can only speak from the Navy perspective: fly aircraft, drive ships, drive submarines, lead SEALs, etc. Less in-the-trenches work, IMO.

Re: Damn...sometimes I hate the Air Force!
Yea, I'm trying to become a pilot so theirs a back up job once I get out of the military afterwards whenever I feel like getting out for good, but what are chances that'd I'd be able to actually get to become one? (Like can you apply for the posistion, will military let you??) and I think I meet all requirements..

Re: Damn...sometimes I hate the Air Force!
Can you really do that in the Air Force and get away with it?
You should have joined the Marine Corps. Had I seen or if I ever see a finger like that I will break it off and make you eat it. My story is as follows. My wife had a stroke in April of '06. I explained this to the monitor ( guy who decides where you go and when). He kept asking me to go to Okinawa..I kept telling him no I cant go my wife needs me. So one day he calls up my boss and asks him if the stroke story is true. My boss confirms it. Three days later he cuts me orders for a UNACCOMPANIED tour for 1 year to Okinawa. It gets better. He does not tell me. I find out one month prior to my departure date that I am outbound. The Marine Corps monitors travel to various bases and get face time with thier particular group that they deal with. When my monitor made a trip to my base, I made a trip to see him personally. My current orders are now to Augusta Ga..non deployable unit. Very nice area.

Yup, Thunderdome style. Two men enter, one man leaves.

Most likely I would have received a Letter of Reprimand. If he would have touched me, I would have stomped his face into the ground. That is the thing with the Air Force, most the Senior NCO's are fat crusty old farts that will get there asses kicked by Airmen and Junior NCO's alike.

Re: Damn...sometimes I hate the Air Force!
It's all about Shepherd AFB in Wichita Falls, TX. Fantastic guy to girl ratio due to the fact the Med Tech school is there. These girls are fresh out of basic training and haven't had any male contact for months, so they're ready to pounce. Man, I miss those times. Spent 3 months there back in '01. Every base after that definitely had a shortage of females. ESPECIALLY Diego Garcia (British naval island south of India).

Your selection is dependent on your aptitude score. Your aptitude is made up of 3 criteria: GPA, Military Aptitude and PT scores. Certain majors, mainly engineering, add bonus points to your score. You are then ranked, first to your class and then to the rest of the ROTCers in your year group. Depending on what you have placed on your community selection you are again compared to those. From there it goes to selection committees and in their dark rooms they decide who they want to offer billets. Its quite a bit simplier for the Navy as only unrestricted line billets are available. These are: Surface Officer, Nuclear (Sub or Surface), Student Aviator, Student Flight Officer (Navigator), SEALs, and EOD. Nurses, while in ROTC, have there own seperate deal but are ranked similiarly just amongst themselves when it comes to first duty stations. As far as going Naval Aviation. You have an additional test, the ASTB as well as an extensive flight physical. Like the SATs you can pick up practice books to prepare. The Air Force and Navy/Marine Corps use the same test. The test does seem to change quite a bit as the Services are still trying to find the most accurate way to determine potential aviators/flight officers. Previous tests have been made up of three scores that are graded on a 1-8 scale with 8 8 8 being the best score. Recently scores in the 5-6 range seem to be the minimum providing you have a solid overall aptitude score. However, considering its the military, this is subject to change from year to year depending on how full the pipeline is and how many pilots/nfos have left the service. From my school, with about 20-30 Mids in a senior class, about 6-10 people are selected each year with maybe one or two not picking up either SNA or SNFO. This could easily change from school to school but recently if you put in for it and were competitive you pretty much got into the program. Getting your wings usual takes about 2 years. Once you have your wings you owe the Navy 8 years and you are still not done training as you now have to learn to fly your fleet aircraft. There really is no need to worry about which girls are best in the service because there are a lot more eligible civilian girls than military ones. Come on you are in college, there are more members of the opposite sex then you will know what to do with.
