It was good but i really hated the arrangement/improvisation or whatever it was that changed the song from the original. Not a good song to do that in IMO.

He just overdid it. Imagine is a simple song, and he was too busy trying to show off his vocal technique to sing it the way it should be sung.

Yep. Same reason I can't stand most of Mariah Carey's songs. We all know she can break crystal glasses with her cords, so somebody needs to tell her to stop showing off...

FWIW, the version he sang is the Eva Cassidy arrangement... wasn't something he improvised/arranged himself:

edit: was just thinking - I hate when people take the national anthem and change the melody and put all crazy runs in it. I wonder if people view this song the same? that any changes are bad changes?

He probably picked it specifically because it was American Idol, and contestants have been chastised before for not picking songs to show off their voice. The real 'Imagine' isn't exactly the most vocally stimulating song.

He was "eh". He might have a better voice later with some more practice, coaching, etc. As is he's better than most of us here singing in the bathroom.

I'll post later what my good friend (who happens to work in the music industry) thinks.
