Re: Robot video you have to see!!!
For the curious (and lazy) public, "BigDog is powered by a gasoline engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system."
The thing is nifty, a little freaky though. Every now and then while I was watching the video I felt like I was watching two people in a horse custom walking about, of course I knew it was a robot, the gait was just a little freaky.BF 2142:|TG| Birdman10113

I am amazed.

The hungry, ignorant man immediately grasps that he is handed a fish, but is bewildered when handed a net. The man who shivers in the cold thinks happily of the man who invites him to sit by his fire, and somewhat poorly of the man who loans him an axe, flint and steel.

Re: Robot video you have to see!!!
The more I think about this, the more I laugh. For some reason I can't help but compare it to Asimo, the robot Honda developed. They are worlds apart, Asimo serves sedately drinks and plays trumpet, while the BigDog stomps over terrain and somehow still comes off as more lifelike. I wonder what would happen if you kicked Asimo in the side while it was walking? Lmfao!

Re: Robot video you have to see!!!
Remember, Asimo fell down some stairs and got a booboo recently. I don't even think he can get back up.
This thing could probably get up and keep going.

Very cool. I like when they try and kick it over.
As a poster said on IGN, which made me laugh:
"I was going to say something about the inevitable enslavement of humanity by our future robot overlords. But then I realized that they are using this thing as an equivalent to a robotic llama.
And everybody likes llamas.

Hmm, am i the only one seeing the Star wars referance to a ATAT. Make it 15 meters tal and put guns on it and soldiers in it and there you go

Re: Robot video you have to see!!!
You probably need to consider animals of similar size when thinking about an ATAT. Would you want to ride a T-Rex? Is anything else in that size class nimble enough to think of as a vehicle?

So, I'd probably drop a few hundred bucks on one of these. But, wonder what the vet bills would be like...

And, another project of Boston Dynamics, RHex, is a pretty cool little open source robot. I keep thinking this thing has a personality... Rhex, the little robot that could.

This one is a really short one of RHex, but probably my favorite... reminds me of a toddler.

Re: Robot video you have to see!!!
I think we need to spend more money figuring out how to POWER the stupid things first... there was an article in Scientific American talking about how robotics has stagnated somewhat because everyone' focusing on 'proof of concept' designs. We have a billion robots that can move in a variety of ways, but there's only been one measured success of an optical robotic sensor, and it was only good at one thing.
I can't think of any robot made that can look around and evaluate even basics of its surroundings, much less move around them. Well, I guess Roomba can...
What's more, every robot weighs 400 tons and lasts about 3 minutes before running out of power if it's not plugged into a 120V 400hz wall outlet drawing 45kwh.
Likely, it's because it's easier to get money when you can show something doing something, rather than just saying it can do it for a long time.
