Re: Need name ideas for a charity
My wife is more creative (and attractive, and intelligent, but I digress...) than I am, so I posed this question to her.
She's heard me talk before about picking "blank slate" names (I made those words up just now). I remember hearing a panel discussion about 10 years ago that talked about Amazon and Infoseek (competitors at the time in the online book sales market). The panel cited Amazon's name as part of its success. When both companies tried to expand to selling things non-literary, the "Infoseek" name didn't fit. My wife mentioned that you might consider such a name. She asked what your initials were. I told her your first name. She asked who your mentor was. I didn't know. But she was looking for something that to most would be completely generic, having nothing to do with "computers", per se, but that would be a great conversation starter as word-of-mouth happened. For example, if someone named "Elliot" helped YOUR family through a hard time when you were a kid, you might name your non-profit "Elliot's Group". Unique without constraints. Another angle she recommended was to look in the thesaurus for words similar to "home", "family", etc. So, I went to the thesaurus. ( Interestingly enough, today's "word of the day" is "salubrious". It means "favorable to health; promoting health". So, something like "Salubrious Tech" comes to mind. ) "Home"-like words can turn into stuff like this: Domestic Tech (or Computing) Domestech Domestech Servants "Ease"-like words gave me this: Digital Assuagement -- I'm sure my wife would be appalled to see what my best efforts (even with the help of a thesaurus) produced, but you get the idea -- it can help expand your options and ideas.
