My understanding is that the troops were Canadian, in use by the British army. More interesting is that what followed was, if my memory is correct, simultaneously a tornado, hurricane, and lightning storm in the area which caused significant casualties among the Canadians/Britains, and ended up driving them into a retreat.

i was just being sarcastic.......didn't mean to ruffle so many feathers, and i did have an experience a few years back in paris when i backpacking through the city and all i wanted was to get something to eat. However about 3 Parisians (mind you this was in 2003) basically accused me of being a tyrant (i didn't realize having a college degree = Master's Degree in Tyranny), and then I was told how America is this and America is that, then one Parisian told me how he was glad 9/11 occurred, and then i punched him in the face, and told him some not so nice things, I hate getting into fights, because normally i end up breaking them up and get hit while trying to stop it, but i had about enough of it, once someone mentioned 9/11........I have to say I was pretty proud of myself hitting a snotty Parisian in the nose with a 35lb backpack on, he gushed blood.

In any event, I was just saying how today is VE Day, and its also Don Rickles Birthday, and how we should be thankful for the Allied Troops for fighting against Nazi Germany, and Italy and to be thankful that Europe didn't succumb to Tyranny that could have shaped the world differently had their not been a collective effort to put an end to it.

Indeed... Hope my comments didn't off snarky either. You gotta love the Allied effort, it's amazing how the whole country rallied to the cause then.

That's like saying because there's black people in the US military, Africa is clearly fighting in the war in Iraq. Or Mexico. Or in the case of our squadron, El Salvador.

They're still American soldiers fighting under American commanders under the American flag.

Saying that Canada burned the White House implies falsely that the Canadian army itself (which I don't even think existed at the time, as it was still under British rule) invaded the US, under the flag of Canada.

At any rate, the Wikipedia article on the burning of Washington says absolutely nothing about any significant makeup of Canadian nationals, so I'm personally inclined to believe that the whole "Canada burned the White House" is an urban legend.

British troops from Canada would still be British soldiers in this case, seeing as how Canada was entirely British-controlled.

I never said that the sovereign state of Canada invaded Washington DC. The geographic area of Canada existed back then, and if a soldier was born and raised in that region, and then fought in the British army, then I think it's safe to say that he was a British soldier from Canada, aka Canadian. If I joined the US Army, I wouldn't stop being a Texan, or White. Soldiers have multiple identities, and it's part of State-Pride/Nationalism/Ethnocentrism/Whatever to pick and tout one particular identity, in this case the soldier's geographic home.

Anyways, I can't remember specifically where I heard that the troops were Canadian, but I'm pretty sure it was either from the textbook of my AP US History class, or some video we watched for it. Beyond that, I have neither the energy nor emotional investment to research this any further :P
