Re: Investing money?
One book that's still on my shelf that I'll probably buy for each of my kids as they get to their teens is Andrew Tobias's: The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need. Lots of basics. A few strings of strange advice. But overall a good, first read on investing.

Re: Investing money?
If you've been following the Tactical Gamer Fantasy Stock Market thread, then your answer would be NO. I'm about to get into stocks this summer, BUT I'm looking at stocks as gambling money. You might as well be playing in Vegas in my opinion. I'm going to be playing the stock market for fun and not betting the farm on it. Just a small portion of my play money, that's all.
Personally, I'm all about Mutual Funds, maxing out Roth IRA annually, and my emergency money is in a Money Market."Common sense is not so common." -Voltaire

Re: Investing money?
Go to Fidelity.com and buy 3 mutual funds.
Put $5k in Fidelity Magellan Fund
Put $2.5k in Fidelity Latin America Fund
Put $2.5k in Fidelity International Growth Fund
Keep contributing to each of those funds for the next 10 years and you should end up being happy with the results.

Re: Investing money?
Those Funds have fairly high expense ratios when compared to index funds. Not to say they wont work in a particular strategy, but when the numbers get big it they can make a huge difference.
Check those funds vs FSMKX and VFINX Here

Re: Investing money?
Expense ratios matter very little in the long term. It's much, much more important to find a good fund and stick with it.
And, Dirtboy, individual stocks are a VERY bad idea unless it's just play money that you're dealing with, and you can afford to lose it all. They are absolutely not safe.
Serious, if you're looking to invest less than five years, look at CDs or savings/money market accounts. More than five years, look at mutual funds.
Contributing to the funds means to keep adding money to them. Most people set up retirement accounts using mutual funds set up inside of some sort of tax shelter (IRA, Roth, etc...). Then they set up some sort of allotment that'll put an automatic deposit into the account every payday.Become a supporting member!

Re: Investing money?
How do Mutual Funds work? Are they like savings accounts that you can't touch? What type of mutual fund would you suggest if you were in my position?
