    Gentlemen: Start your clicking fingers.

I find it hillarious that nobody seems to remember the insane click-fest Diablo and Diablo 2 were.

That being said... I'd have to be burning in hell to not buy that game when it comes out.... And I am guessing that Diablo 3 will lead to hell again, so... Looks like a visit to hell is imminent for me.

In a fine Italian restaurant (the four star experience), the menu choices usually evolve and change as time goes on.

Blizzard is, say... the Macaroni Grill of Italian restaurants. The food is good, but no real evolution in the experience. Each time you go, its the same good food, cooked assembly-line fashion.

What 5 classes do you think there will be?
We know of Barbarian and Witchdoctor.
I'm thinking an Amazon Class and Mage Class definitely, but not sure about the 5th. The Witchdoctor pretty much replaces the Necromancer imo. And JEEZ I can't wait to use Zombie Wall! lol

Not really. You still have pasta, chicken, beef, shrimp, etc. as your choices. Oh sure, the chicken this time is made with pineapple salsa instead of Alfredo sauce... but it's still a chicken dish at base. It's not like the restaurant invented a new meat and now serves Woopleburgers, made from the finest raised, never genetically modified free-range Wooples.

Honestly, I don't think I could name a single, truly ground-breaking game that's been created in the past 5 years... maybe even 10 or more. When it comes down to it you have the following genres: RTS, TBS (turn-based strategy), FPS, RPG, racing, MMO, flight sim, card/board game... I'm sure I left some out, but that's all that come to mind right now. All of these genres have been around for years, even MMO's. Games these days are honestly nothing more than repeats of something that was made a long time ago, just with some modifications to mechanics, features and graphics.

Sure, every so often a new feature or shiny thing hits that lots of people like, such as 3D graphics or ragdoll physics, and the game that has it becomes a "smash hit" or "revolutionizes gaming." But can you convince me that Call of Duty 4 is completely and totally different from the original Counter-Strike? They're both still multi-player shooters at heart, just with some different style- not unlike changing the sauce on your chicken. If look at things that way, your perspective may change a little.

Personally, I've been hoping for D3 for a long time now. And when it was announced... I was honestly less than enthused. I think the first thought that went through my head was, "bleh, another Diablo." And remember, that was from a guy that has actually been wanting another Diablo. So I wasn't too excited, and then I watched the gameplay video. Re-structuring of talents and how your character works, no more potion-chugging, honestly 100% 3D environments, destructible environments (bring a wall down atop your enemies, anyone?), bosses performing fatalities when the player dies... At the root of it all, it's still mindless smashing of throngs of monsters and lots of mouse clicking, that's a given. But the sauce of the dish (and maybe even the garnish) is going to be changing, and that will keep me entertained for a while.

Well, that and the new D3 porn that will doubtlessly be created.

Innovation is cost prohibitive. Most companies can't afford to lose hundreds of millions on a flop, so they stick with the proven known sellers.

Personally I and my friends are looking forward to Diablo III. We played the crap out of D2. It's one of the few truly co-op experiences left in gaming. Is it going to be more of the same? Sure. But I haven't really played D2 in 5+ years, so bring it on.

I do agree that Blizzard needs a new IP though. They used to be pretty good at creating them.

I've been smitten with the nostalgia hammer and have been leveling up a new Diablo 2 Necromancer on the US East battle.net realm. Anyone in TG up for some Dungeon Clicking, send me a PM, might be fun... though I've sunk back into my old rut of playing way too freaking much and will probably be a ways ahead.

Eh, the games below are the games I think that in the last 5 years have really changed their genres. You don't have to like them, but ignoring their influence in the gaming industry is silly.

    RTS - Company of Heroes
    TBS - Civilization 4
    FPS - BF2
    MMO - WoW

Civ4? What did Civ4 do that the first three didn't? And you can't say multiplayer, since the Civ4 multiplayer doesn't work and you either have to use PitBoss or other hotseat/email options to get it to work...

I like Civ4. A lot. But there's certainly nothing revolutionary there. Same with BF2. It's just the obvious evolution from BF1942.

Made the assumption that Ladder meant PVP Based rewards, so I made the char on Non-Ladder. I've only got to level 39 this past week though.

The only one of those that I haven't played is CoH and, from watching gameplay footage, it's still just an RTS. As for Civ4, BF2 and WoW, I loved them all- but they're not "new".

Civilization 4 is Civ1-3 with better graphics and a few new concepts (like a trireme being able to sink a modern battleship ). Battlefield 2 did throw in squad structure and things like artillery (having a CO isn't new, it's been done before in Global Operations), but it's still just an FPS like the other BF's and FPS games before it. And WoW, while being probably the most popular computer game in history, is still elves and dwarves (or trolls and orcs, if you prefer) running around leveling up and killing dragons. :P

Certainly, each game added or re-designed things that made more people like the features and thus the things became more popular. But can you say that they're truly new concepts in gaming? That's like painting a racing stripe on a car and giving it cruise control, then saying it's a brand new, never before seen mode of transportation. That's my argument to people (including myself) who say that D3 is just more of the same: Every single thing that you play these days is just more of the same; we haven't had anything truly, uniquely new in a long long time.

I honestly think that the next time we'll see something truly new will be when VR becomes un-clunky and commonplace. And for the record, in case anyone is confused from my opinions, I definitely do intend to get D3.

You are proving the point that some of us are making. Quality is often more important that inovation. None of those games are inovative or revolutionary.

The very fact that you put classifications like RTS and FPS shows that these games where just the best of a gener.

I just played Civ3 a couple of weeks ago and it is just as fun as Civ4, Civ4 is just prettier and has some user interface tweaks, really. But the core game is the same as civ1 that is over 10 years old.

So all you are saying is that Quality made the differences. Which is what some of us are saying.
