    Amateur Photography

My wife and I tend to take weekend trips up into the mountains (of NC / VA). We picked up a Canon Rebel XTi digital SLR camera a few months ago.

We're looking to take better scenic / landscape photographs when we're on our trips but really don't know where to start. Does anyone recommend amateur photography books or websites?

I'm not really looking to understand the technology / science behind it. More something along the lines of "if you want to do this / look like this... then you do this."

    This is a good one.

Most photos include the settings that were used.

You might be familiar with some of the members

DeviantArt is sometimes a bit tough to navigate, but the vast majority of the pictures there have the settings used to take them, as well as the camera used. If you dig, there are generally good tutorials on everything from basic photography to photomanipulation.

    Try:

This is a forum for Canon people. I myself just picked up a 20D! Gonna have the wife teach me how to shoot.

Cool, what kind of lens do you have?

Here's a few of my favorites. Taken with my XTi and a 70-200mm F4L lens:

And I second POTN, I just found it and found it to be a good site (nice prices for used equipment too!)

If you search Lifehacker.com they have a ton of articles with links to help and how to for photos.
Here are just some of my bookmarks.

Learn photography with free online course

Master Your DSLR Camera, Part 1: Program Mode

Shoot Close-Ups Like a Pro with Macro Photography

How to take great digital portraits

    Add variety to your photography

There are a ton more on Lifehacker though.
Here are some others from other sites:

Camera basics: shutter-speed, aperture and ISO

Nikon Digital Learning Center --Even though it says Nikon, that whole site is awesome and can be a big help. A lot of the people post settings on good pics.
    Also- http://www1.nikonusa.com/slrlearningcenter/index.php

    Here are some from Canon

The wife is a Nikon person, and we are looking at getting a rumored D90 when it comes out. This article was posted yesterday actually:
Nikon D90 rumors heating up ahead of Photokina as well

Also, sites like these can be a big help if you find the right videos

And Asch, I'll have to meet up with you in Western NC sometime. I love living at the beach but enjoy the mountains.
Have you been to the Nantahala River/Bryson City area yet? It's awesome. Went there on my honeymoon.

Stoop and you'll be stepped on; stand tall and you'll be shot at.
